Coco Gauff’s Ex-Coach Radiates American Pride as 23YO Star’s Triumph Boosts Women’s Rankings

The future of American women’s tennis is in safe hands! Recently, the 23-year-old American tennis star, Amanda Anisimova clinched the biggest title of her career in Doha. She defeated Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko quite comfortably by 6-4,6-3 in the epic final of the 2025 Qatar Open. With this win, Anisimova has managed to make a massive leap in the WTA Rankings. She started the tournament ranking 41 in the world and now she’s moved inside the Top 20. Coco Gauff’s ex-coach Brad Gilbert, recently highlighted a broader picture. What are his thoughts on the golden days of American women’s tennis?

Tennis has always been a popular sport among American women. However, shortly after Serena Williams’ retirement and Venus Williams’ absence from the Tour, everyone wondered who would take up the baton to carry forward this legacy next. Coco Gauff gave the answer at the 2023 US Open. She became the first American teenager to win the US Open title since Serena Williams in 1999. Then in 2024, we saw Jessica Pegula reaching the final of the 2024 US Open.

Although she was defeated by the current world number one, Aryna Sabalenka in the final, Pegula’s heroics in that mega event were the topic of discussion for the rest of the year. As soon as that year ended, we saw another American woman, Madison Keys, put her name in the history books by clinching the 2025 AO title. Talking about the future of American tennis, Madison Keys once said, “There’s a group of really great younger women that are, um, I think they’re not only great players but it’s been really nice to be able to kind of get to train with them and be around them. I think they’re, I think the US is in really good hands with them.

Is really the future of American women’s tennis in safe hands? Well, if 6 players from one nation feature inside the Top 18, then surely we can say the future is pretty bright! Recently, Coco Gauff’s ex-coach, Brad Gilbert came up with a tweet highlighting Amanda Anisimova’s victory. In that tweet, he also highlighted, “Live WTA Ranking with AA win in Doha there are now 6 American women in the top 18 very impressive .

If we take a look at the WTA Live Rankings, Coco Gauff is currently placed at the third spot with 6538 points and she’s followed by Jessica Pegula (5). Pegula has 5076 points! Madison Keys’ incredible performance in the 2025 season has earned her the sixth spot in that list with 4680 points. Who’s up next? Well, Keys is followed by Emma Navarro (9), Danielle Collins (12), and Amanda Anisimova (18). Amanda Anisimova currently has 2316 points! It’ll be interesting to see if she can earn a few more points and climb up the ladder further in the next few months. What did she say after this historic win, though?

Coco Gauff’s compatriot, Amanda Anisimova shares her thoughts on her title triumph in Doha

Amanda Anisimova broke into the Top 20 for the first time in her career. Not only that, she also became the lowest-ranked player to win the tournament. With this win, Anisimova has now also become the second American to win the Qatar Open title since Monica Seles in 2002. The journey to the summit was never easy for this young American. Apart from injuries, there was a time when she even had to take a total break from tennis due to ‘burnout’, in order to protect her mental health. Gauff even gave a reaction to Anisimova’s decision at that time!

So, the girl who became the 2017 US Open junior champion defeating Coco Gauff in the final by 6-0,6-2 had to later watch her junior rivals surpass her one by one. Amanda Anisimova saw Coco Gauff clinching her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open. Coco Gauff is now 20 years old and she has already clinched 9 titles including the big one in her singles career. On the other hand, the Qatar Open title was Amanda Anisimova’s third title in her career.

Anisimova became the first American player to defeat six top-40 opponents in a single event since Serena Williams at the 2007 AO. What did she say after this win? “There’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of tears…It feels amazing. It’s been such an incredible week here. I think every match has been very tough. I’m just super happy with my performances and my level here, and to be able to get my first 1000 title is really special to me.” She also spoke about how proud she is of herself about how she has dealt with the challenges that came her way in the last few years. Anisimova even thanked her team for their constant support. What are your thoughts on her incredible triumph? Share your views in the comment section.
