Who would’ve thought that Alex Cora would be a part of this perfect moment of pure internet gold! Cora had told WEEI he wanted to be at the Coldplay show on Wednesday night. He was just spending the last days of his All-Star break with his family at Gillette Stadium. But little did he know he was about to have a front-row seat to a viral megascandal.
The stadium’s “kiss cam” focused on a cozy couple during the show. The man was later identified as Astronomer CEO Andy Byron. The woman was the head of HR at the company, Kristin Cabot. They freaked out when they saw their faces on the Jumbotron. While the man ducked, his sidepiece was in utter shock and turned around to hide from the camera. Coldplay frontman Chris Martin spotted their response and cracked a fateful joke. “Either they are having an affair or they’re just very shy.” Later, he commented, “Oh s—, I hope we didn’t do something bad.”
It was a story that spread like wildfire from social media to the sports world. Boston’s very own sports network, NESN, perfectly captured the hilarious crossover. The network posted a tweet that summed up the entire situation. It read, “‘I [Alex Cora] was actually at the [Coldplay] concert.’ Alex Cora saw Coldplay and witnessed more than just a concert .”

When asked about his holiday on Friday, July 18, Alex Cora laughed. He spoke with reporters before the series with the Cubs. With a smile and giggles, he confirmed his attendance.
“It was good. It was good,” Cora said, laughing. “I was actually in the Wednesday concert. It was good. Yeah, yeah, it was fun. Yeah.” His knowing laugh confirmed that the entire ludicrous scene featured a celebrity witness to the bizarre saga. He then became serious and shared, “Stayed in the area with the family and just hung out and then came here to this beautiful place, you know, to start the second part of the season.”
Beyond Alex Cora: From moment to meme to shattering win streak
After the storm of that cam moment, several posts started making rounds. And one was from Coldplay itself. We’re not sure if that’s another meme from our beloved internet. But the post sure made sense. “Starting with our next show, we’re introducing camera-free audience sections for people and their sidepieces.”
And it wasn’t just fans who joined the fun. Even professional sports teams took part. And the Seattle Mariners went a step beyond. They shared a picture of their star catcher, Cal Raleigh, with a hilarious caption. “If your significant other was recently spotted at a Coldplay concert, email [email protected].” The league itself was laughing with it now.
ESPN started one of their programs with that captured scene. And the host commented, “It’s time to Kiss It Goodbye. Baseball’s probably not the only thing you could say that about recently.”
Well, as the sports world continues to joke around, both Andy Byron and Kristin Cabot maintain public silence. But in the meantime, an apology note from Byron circulated online. It read, in part, “What was supposed to be a night of music and joy turned into a deeply personal mistake… I also want to express how troubling it is that what should have been a private moment became public without my consent.” This piece of misinformation, from a parody account, only added fuel to the fire before the company had issued a response.
For Astronomer, the moment came on Friday when it released the statement it had been silent about for so long. “Astronomer is committed to the values……. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability. The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter ….. Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect.” The company also placed Byron and Cabot on leave.
Now, amid the chaotic off-field storyline, Boston needed to return to action. The Red Sox entered the second half of the season with a strong 53-45 record. They hold a Wild Card spot, sitting just 3.0 games behind the first-place Blue Jays.
Unfortunately, on Friday, they suffered a 4-1 loss against the Cubs, ending their 10-game winning streak. And while a huge chunk of the internet is having fun with the viral Coldplay moment, the Red Sox nation is getting frustrated again.
Still, with the hardest remaining schedule in the league, they have the opportunity to prove they truly are a postseason contender.
