Who Are Sidney Crosby’s Parents? Know All About Pittsburgh Penguin Captain’s Family and Their Support

Over the years, Sidney Crosby has become a pillar of Team Canada’s attacking prowess thanks to his incredible skills with the hockey stick. With an impressive 609 goals and 1045 assists in 1327 games, the 37-year-old forward has made a name for himself. He became a formidable force in the NHL. Since getting drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005, Crosby has led his team to three Stanley Cup victories. But all that success wouldn’t be possible without his folks having his back through thick and thin.

In the world of elite sports, we see athletes excel through hard work and sheer grit. But most wouldn’t be able to pursue their passion if their families didn’t help them out. Similarly, Sidney Crosby’s incredible success owes a lot to his parents’ support throughout the years. But who are they and how have they lent their aid so Sidney could go on to become a titular NHL star?

Who are Sidney Crosby’s parents?

The Penguins captain was born to Troy Crosby and Trina Forbes Crosby in 1987 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Troy has a bachelor’s degree from the Royal Military College of Canada and a Masters from the University of Tennessee Space Institution. Sidney’s dad also used to play hockey during his youth days, tending the goal for the Verdun Junior Canadiens. Likewise, he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens as the 240th overall pick in 1984. Troy’s colleagues from the hockey community were the gateway for Sidney to get a peek inside the sport. The sport runs deep within the family’s roots!

Troy Crosby’s former junior teammate Claude Lemieux invited the family to watch a game between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers, and it was love at first sight for Sidney. His father didn’t continue his hockey career, but it would be safe to assume Troy’s experience helped shape Sidney Crosby’s journey in the NHL.

Sidney’s mother, Trina Crosby, on the other hand, has been a supportive figure in the Pittsburgh star’s life. In 2013, she accepted an invitation from the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, which helped her to learn more about the sport that her husband and son were so fond of. The Crosby family did its best to allow Sidney to find his place among the NHL’s best stars. And even now, after almost two decades in the game, he still can’t forget how his dad was always there to help him appreciate hockey!

He was there for everything. I remember how tight he used to tie my skates. He made them real tight. To this day I still have my skates probably crazy tight because that’s just the way he tied them,” Sidney Crosby told the NY Times in an interview in 2021. The Crosby’s unwavering love also endured when Sidney’s career came under fire and the family banded together to navigate the troubled times.

Sidney Crosby’s parents walked the difficult road with him

Many members of the hockey community allege Sidney only got to become great because his parents could afford the high fees of Shattock St. Mary. But when in 2011, their son suffered a major concussion, Troy and Trina Crosby proved it takes more than financial well-being to be supportive.

Sidney spent 320 days dealing with the concussion and his parents barely left his side. After an arduous battle, Crosby was finally deemed fit to play, and Troy was “more relieved than anything,” to see his son back in his natural habitat. “As a parent you are anxious. I don’t care if he’s an NHL player or not, he’s still your son and you worry about him,” he said.

In 2017, Sidney became the 86th player in NHL history to reach the 1,000 points milestone when his assist and overtime goal helped the Penguins seal a 4-3 overtime victory against the Winnipeg Jets. Crosby’s seminal career moment prompted his parents and sister, Taylor, to stand up and join the fans in lauding his emphatic accomplishment. But Troy and Trina’s love and support weren’t limited to only their son.

The Crosbys love to spread the love, bolstering their son’s team-player mentality

When the Penguins traveled to Nova Scotia to take on the Ottawa Senators, in 2023, the whole team got a pleasant surprise thanks to Sidney Crosby’s folks. “His parents coming with goodie bags at our hotel – it’s first class. There was a loaf of banana bread in the room, which was unbelievable. Everyone was telling me that Sid was making it, but I didn’t believe them,” Crosby’s Pittsburgh forward Noel Acciari revealed how his teammate’s family took everyone by surprise with the kind gesture.

This enthusiasm and support likely shaped Sidney’s mindset, helping him overcome setbacks. Days before the 4 Nations Face-Off, Crosby’s participation in the Canadian squad was under serious debate. Notably, a hand injury threatened his form. But being the champ he is, Crosby was there to help the team win against Sweden in the tournament’s first match. And yes, this is despite allegedly playing with “one good arm.

But his mere presence helped Team Canada immensely. “It matters to everybody in here,” squad captain Connor McDavid made his feelings clear about having Sidney Crosby beside him for the international hockey tourney. Will that be enough for Monday when Canada takes on Finland in a bid to make it to the 4 Nations final and even the score with the USA? Tell us your thoughts in a comment!
