“Maybe my favorite sporting show,” says the 47th POTUS about the Masters. A golfer and owner of multiple golf courses across the globe, Donald Trump has been on the greens a lot lately. He has some great connections on and off the course. Recently, Trump clinched the Senior Club Championship title at an in-house course, the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter.
On April 12th, 2025, Trump was asked about the tournament contenders, and his response was shocking. As per the post shared on X by Rapid Response 47, he said, “They have so many great guys. They’re all friends of mine…Scottie Scheffler’s great, Bryson’s great…Justin Rose…you have some fantastic golfers at the top.” With former green jacket winner and this year’s runner-up in the statement, the president missed out on listing Rory McIlroy, which left the world to question his move.
But days after his ignorant statement, POTUS has done his part, stepping onto send good wishes to the winner of the Masters. Speaking with the reporter of Air Force One, Trump shared his happiness with Rory achieving a great career feat. He said, “I have to congratulate Rory.” He further shared, “That took tremendous courage. He was having a hard time, but it showed great guts and stamina, and courage.” Rory McIlroy’s last major victory came in 2014, and since then, the struggle to become the 6th grand slam winner has continued till 2025. But the fact is, his persistent approach towards the game and hard work has shown the result and earned praise from the entire golf community.
Continuing praising, POTUS said, “People have no idea how tough that is. He came back. It’s better for him that it happened that way because that showed real courage to have come back from what could’ve been a tragedy – it was amazing.” McIlroy, apart from the Masters victory struggle, also faced a gut-wrenching loss last year at the US Open. However, he silenced retirement rumours with a strong start, bagging the AT&T and The Players titles before entering the Augusta National. The Green Jacket was long pending.
Well, this isn’t the first time Trump and McIlroy have shared praise for each other. As in the past, there have been many instances where the duo was seen sharing a course together.
Donald Trump and Rory McIlroy played together
The former world No. 1 and 5-time major winner has been among the most influential personalities of sport. On the other hand, the POTUS is for the entire world. But the duo has a common interest, which is golf. In the past, the two have been seen playing together and discussing the sport. McIlroy played in 2017 and 2020, but after his controversial jab at the president’s leadership during the pandemic, he doubted his reappearance with the POTUS.
But interestingly, the reunification process has brought them back on course. Before the Masters, Trump congratulated the golfer for his win at the Pebble Beach. He said, “I love Rory, I think Rory is great. I think he’s a great golfer, he just won two weeks ago.” Well, this shocking praise for the golfer after his controversial take on the president came due to their interaction at the course. As POTUS further shared, “I played golf with him three weeks ago; he’s really a fantastic player. He has good form, too. When he played with me, he played very well.” The duo, which played together last in 2020 together was expected to never play again, but fortunately, they have shared the stage again.
Now, with McIlroy even participating with Kai Trump in her YouTube videos, things are starting to get back to normal. Even his earlier ignorance is settled with the praise. But has it settled after the ignorance? What are your thoughts on it? Share with us in the comments below.
