When a professional golfer ties a 57-year tournament scoring record, you expect excitement. You anticipate fist pumps. You’d think they’d acknowledge the historic significance. Not Justin Thomas. Despite firing an electrifying 61 at Harbour Town Golf Links yesterday, Thomas acted like he’d just completed a casual practice round. His historic performance vaulted him alongside Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley atop the RBC Heritage leaderboard. Yet Thomas displayed remarkable indifference toward his exceptional achievement.
“I’d say everything for the most part. I just played really solid,” Thomas stated casually in his post-round press conference. He continued with striking nonchalance, “I feel like I didn’t do anything crazy.” This subdued reaction came after matching David Frost (Round 2, 1994) and Troy Merritt (Round 2, 2015) for the lowest 18-hole score in tournament history. Most players would celebrate such a milestone. Thomas, however, described his record-tying 10-under round as if recounting a trip to the grocery store.
This is a developing story..
