After Pat McAfee Vowed to Save ESPN Jobs, David Pollack Breaks Silence on Being Replaced by Him

Pat McAfee was always a wild card, but his recent stint on ESPN’s College GameDay has been an actual rollercoaster, equal parts controversy, pandemonium, and real heart. His fellow GameDay host, Kirk Herbstreit, actually related this anecdote, saying McAfee stood prepared to draw from his pocket just to keep the staff and the show’s magic going. But there isn’t always sunshine and standing ovations. McAfee’s stint on GameDay has also attracted diehard fans and outspoken critics alike. He’s been scrutinized, with each joke, each off-script remark, and each crazy prediction picked apart by media and fans.

However, before McAfee was a resident wildman of the show, there was David Pollack. Pollack was the level head, the football lifer who infused analysis and a level of calm into the craziness. But as ESPN began to stir things up, Pollack was let out, and McAfee fell right into that vacant seat. So in a sense, McAfee didn’t merely take Pollack’s place; he rewrote the entire GameDay experience. But Pollack is a good sport, as he has accepted the reality and taken a stand in a recent interview with On3. “Pat was hired to do a job, just like I would have been called in to do a job. I don’t feel like Pat was the reason, no. They hired Pat, and Pat is really good at what he does, very different, very unique,” says Pollack.

Pollack on McAfee: “Pat was hired to do a job, just like I would have been called in to do a job. I don’t feel like Pat was the reason, no. They hired Pat, and Pat is really good at what he does, very different, very unique.”
