After Wife’s Trouble in Pregnancy, Christian McCaffrey Sends a Strong Message on Faith Amid Return to Old Habits

Life, man. One moment, you’re that guy who’s making defenders’ lives tough on the field. And the next, you’re powerless and praying for something far beyond anyone’s control. Christian McCaffrey—the NFL’s most electrifying running back has experienced both such situations. But now, he’s making a strong statement both on and off the pitch after something that shook his world in ways no hit ever could.

A couple of weeks ago, Christian McCaffrey and Olivia Culpo received the most exciting news of their lives: that they were expecting their first child together. But there was an emotional rollercoaster hidden underneath the Instagram-worthy moments.

In a recent TikTok video, former Miss Universe Culpo got brutally honest about the struggles she faced in the first trimester of her pregnancy. She wasn’t just dealing with morning sickness but was on full-blown bed rest since week two. On top of that, she caught pneumonia, was bedridden for nearly a month, and then developed a subchorionic hematoma—a condition that caused her heavy bleeding. In her own words, it was “a lot… heavy.”

Anyone who has been through pregnancy complications would relate to how helpless and powerless one can feel in such moments. And Christian McCaffrey isn’t invincible as well, he knew he couldn’t just muscle through. Recently, McCaffrey posted this on his Instagram story: “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” – 2 Timothy 1:7. A verse that speaks volumes, especially in the context of what he and Olivia were going through.  And when life gets tough, people respond differently to overcome the pain and suffering. Some shut down, some get angry, and some turn to something bigger than themselves. So, McCaffrey turned to faith.

And just like that, the faith isn’t just helping him during his tough times off the field, it’s fueling his comeback on the field too.

Christian McCaffrey’s return to old habits—But with a new perspective

McCaffrey is getting ready to make a comeback and if we go by his IG posts, it is going to be EPIC. After injuries derailed his 2024 campaign, the man is on a mission. His Instagram posts have been nothing short of a statement. Whether it’s clips of him grinding shirtless with resistance ropes (because of course he is) or posting a picture of a t-shirt with Colossians 3:23 printed on it: “Whatever you do, do with all your heart, working for the Lord and not for men.”

While Christian McCaffrey is making his stance clear with his workouts, trade rumors are swirling around him. Some analysts like John Middlekauff are saying no team is trading for him given his $19 million salary. The reason? Well, it’s the contract that McCaffrey signed with the San Francisco 49ers for 2 years at $38 million. And moving that kind of contract isn’t easy, he’s one of the highest-paid running backs in the league.

Adding to that, the Sporting News’ Aaliyan Mohammed thinks the 49ers should consider moving him to Dallas. “The Cowboys signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders this offseason. Both players struggled last season and may not be reliable enough to lead the backfield. Last season, the Cowboys had the sixth least rushing yards in the league and had just three runs of over 20 yards. The Cowboys could target a running back in the draft, but this trade with the San Francisco 49ers could land them one of the best players in the NFL.”

Bold? Absolutely, but let’s be real – McCaffrey turns 29 this offseason—dangerously close to the dreaded 30-year mark, when even elite running backs tend to decline. And he has a history of injuries – high ankle sprain, AC joint sprain, and quadriceps strain in 2020. In 2021, before a hamstring strain and ankle sprain ended his season early. In 2024, he was once again sidelined for most of the year with Achilles tendinitis.

But now? He’s training more intelligently, jogging more vigorously, and—above all—playing with a newfound sense of purpose. You begin to view the game somewhat differently when life serves as a reminder of how fleeting everything is. McCaffrey’s faith-filled messages aren’t just about his wife’s pregnancy scare or his return to the field. They’re about a mindset shift. Football is fleeting. Records break. Careers end. But some things—like faith, love, and family—are built to last.
