After Yankees Rookie Exits Dodgers Game Early With Worrying Update, Aaron Boone Confirms Another Injury Scare

Following two brutal winless games, the New York Yankees had a comfortable evening in Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. They’ll be leaving Los Angeles with a solid 7-3 win over the reigning World Series champions. Yes, the Yankees were successful in escaping the sweep. However, injuries have once again brought double trouble.

The 22-year-old rookie outfielder Jasson Domínguez, who has steadily secured his place in the Yankees lineup, had to exit the game early. He has consistently contributed this season. Across 48 games, he has batted .244 with six home runs, 24 RBIs, and a .759 OPS.

It all unfolded in the fifth inning when, during a stolen base attempt, Domínguez slid into second and injured his left thumb. He didn’t leave the field immediately; he stayed and took the field defensively in the same inning. However, in the sixth inning, he was ultimately lifted for pinch-hitter Cody Bellinger.

Before the exit, though, he made a significant impact. He went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI single that got the Yankees in the lead against Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

But Domínguez’s injury wasn’t the only hit the team took. Right before the ninth inning, Yankees’ pitcher Luke Weaver also reported discomfort in his hamstring while stretching in the bullpen. That’s why Aaron Boone opted to bring in Tim Hill instead. The details are yet to be out for Weaver. And for Domínguez, he’s dealing with a left thumb contusion.

In a media appearance after the game, Domínguez opened up about his thumb and stated, “I don’t think there’s much concern about it. Just left thumb contusion. We’re going to see tomorrow how it felt like. But right now, I think there’s nothing to worry about.” Even though there’s nothing to worry about, Aaron Judge confirmed that he was having difficulty gripping the bat until he was replaced.

The Yankees already have three of their top arms on the sidelines. So, even minor injuries feel like major alarms.

When will Chisholm, Cabrera, and Stanton return?

The Yankees have witnessed their roster thinning by injuries throughout this season. Now, for a bit of a silver lining, some of their crucial pieces are returning. Still, one of them will be out till next year.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is expected to be back as early as Tuesday, when the Yankees will kick off their homestand in the Bronx. Earlier, his MRI revealed that he has a high-grade oblique strain with three tears. But the Bahamian ace is all set to be back now. Last week, he began his rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset.

Before his injury, he used to play second base. But before the Yankees-Dodgers series, manager Aaron Boone indicated that he will be playing third base when he returns. On Wednesday, as the Yankees face the Cleveland Guardians, we’ll see how Chisholm takes over third base.

The Yankees want to bring stability to the infield. And Chisholm’s comeback could help the team with that, as Oswaldo Cabrera will be out for a long time. He landed on the 10-day IL on May 13, but he will be on the road to recovery until 2026. With Chisholm, reliever Fernando Cruz is also expected to be back on Tuesday. Having him back will give Boone the flexibility he’s looking for amidst these unexpected lineup disruptions.

The highly anticipated return is undoubtedly that of Giancarlo Stanton. The designated hitter is recovering, but the process is slow. He’s been on a 60-day IL since late March. It’s tennis elbow in both arms that has made him miss 56 games so far. He’s currently taking five to seven at-bats in Tampa. He will begin rehab games soon, and his return is expected sometime later in June. That, too, depending on how his elbow responds.

The Yankees are playing it safe. From minor injuries like Domínguez’s to major injuries like that of Cabrera, the Yankees won’t be rushing. Let’s trust the process, shall we!
