In Major League Baseball, things rarely go as planned. Two of the better teams, one even with one of the highest payrolls, were supposed to have a storybook season. But baseball is anything but predictable. On one hand, the New York Mets stand having lost 12 of their 15 games, even to the Pirates. And on the other you have the Boston Red Sox, who are running out of time and offense.
With Rafael Devers settled in Washington, the lineup looks more like a shadow than a threat. Now three games under .500, the Boston Red Sox are sinking fast and need a lifeline. Lucky for them, the lifeline might be making an entry at the right time—Alex Bregman.
After missing over a month, Alex Bregman finally spoke up about his return. And Boston fans have a reason to feel that flicker of hope now. Speaking to WEEI’s Rob Bradford ahead of Monday’s game, Bregman was not just optimistic; he was determined.

“Bregman says there is a chance he returns before the All-Star break. Very encouraged by today.” That day included baseball activities that had the former Astros star grinning ear to ear. But he wasn’t alone. Alex Cora, their manager, also backed their third baseman, saying that Bregman does sound like a guy who feels “close to 100 percent.” Now, whether that confidence leads to immediate action is another question completely.
But here is a twist—just a few days ago, the team’s message was different. Alex Cora and the medical staff have hinted that Bregman wouldn’t be back until the All-Star break. It was a wait-and-see approach, and it had little to no urgency even though Boston was spiraling down. This is also not the first time this week that a discrepancy has been found between what was first told by the team and what happened. Just recently, Pena, according to Espada, was not seriously yet after a few hours, news of 8 broken ribs came forth.
Coming back to the Sox, the offense has disappeared without Devers and Bregman. And what looked like a contention team now looked close to waving the white flag at the trade deadline. Now, Bregman, with his .299/.385/.553 with 11 homers in 51 games before the injury, might just be the spark that the Boston Red Sox need. It is unclear whether a rehab stint will be needed, but for now, he wants to help. But the real question is whether the front office lets him. For now, though, another exciting piece of information is coming!
Red Sox make surprise roster move ahead
Boston Red Sox, get ready because one of the team’s newer and actually fastest arms might be making his debut tonight. Yes, the team has announced that Jordan Hicks has been officially reinstated from the 15-day injured list and will wear No. 46. All this to make sense, and Zack Kelly, meanwhile, has been optioned by Worcester.
Now if that name sounds familiar, that’s because Hicks was one of the key pieces that Boston got back in the Rafael Devers trade. He has since been ramping up and now seems like he is ready to roll—this time out of the bullpen, where he first made his name with the St. Louis Cardinals. But if you are being honest, his numbers as a starter with the Giants were not beautiful. A 6.47 ERA over 13 outings? So definitely not ideal.
But the thing is, he throws gas, and his fastball is one of the baddest in baseball, and Boston is kind of hoping that shortening his outing now might help him rev it up again. Just imagine Aroldis Chapman and Hicks—they have a weapon to close good games. So, are Boston fans excited to have him? Do you think the tables with turn? Which is honestly the need of the hour, if remaining in contention is still in the picture.
