But it’s for sure the best thing in the world, hands down,” said Shai Gilgeous-Alexander during an interview back in 2024, describing what it feels like to be a father. It was that same year when the Thunder star and his wife welcomed their first son, Ares. Since then, fans have been treated to several wholesome moments shared between father and son, from outings to twinning in jerseys. As the basketball world awaited another update on the precious 1-year-old, the player obliged by bringing him out during his recent matchup. What he didn’t expect, however, was that Anthony Edwards would catch strays from his loving gesture.
In the aftermath of OKC’s 114-88 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves, NBA on ESPN highlighted a clip of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander that was recorded after the conclusion of the game’s first half. Since the player was mic’d up, everything was audible as he walked up to the sidelines and towards his wife and son. Shai took Ares from Hailey Summers, said “Hey buddy”, and landed three kisses on the baby’s cheeks. As the moment went viral on X, several people commented and sent their love to the player.
One X user by the name of ‘ JM ’, however, attempted to ignite something powerful. He took to X and wrote, “Ant saw Shai being a good dad at halftime and was shook the entire 2nd half”. Can I get a “DAAAAMMMMNNNNN” from everyone out there?

The above remark was, of course, a reference to the infamy Anthony Edwards has developed over the last few months. The Minnesota Timberwolves star has been, for quite some time now, in a nasty, public legal battle with his alleged baby mama, Ayesha Howard. After Howard claimed a DNA test allegedly confirmed that Edwards was the father of Howard’s daughter, she released some alleged text messages between her and the player. In one conversation, she revealed that she was pregnant, and Edwards replied, “Get da abortion lol.”
That incident occurred 2 years after Edwards was in the news after a model named Paige Jordae alleged the NBA player urged her to get an abortion. Edwards would later state that “I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man”.
Anthony Edwards already has a daughter, Aislynn, who was born back in March 2024. He and his girlfriend, Shannon, raised her together. Unfortunately, the player’s previous abortion claims, coupled with his ongoing legal battle with his alleged baby mama, do not paint a good picture of the 23-year-old. For the user, this was the comparison he chose to make when putting him and Shai-Gilgeous Alexander in the same frame.
As it turned out, people were certainly left amused enough by the comparison.

As the OG user joked, seeing Shai Gilgeous-Alexander being a good father certainly seemed to affect Anthony Edwards in the 2nd half. Ant was limited to just 5 points, shooting 2-6 (33.3%) field goals and 1-4 (25%) 3-pointers. His 4 rebounds and 2 assists did not matter much in light of his 2 turnovers. And Edwards ended the game with a plus/minus rating of -26 in the 2nd half alone. In the 2nd half, the player scored only 5 points. Edwards’ 13 field goal attempts in Game 1 were his fewest in 11 games this postseason, with the only similar outing happening in Game 2 vs the Warriors.
As such, one social media user wrote, “Sga found ants kryptonite ”. Maybe Shai Gilgeous-Alexander should bring out Ares more often when facing the Timberwolves.

One individual praised the user who roasted Anthony Edwards by writing, “hang this tweet in the Louvre”. Yes, it can be placed right beside the “i don’t kno ball, but i kno how to brush my hair” tweet through which Shaquille O’Neal once roasted Kevin Durant, and any roast tweets Kevin Durant puts out to criticize gamblers or people commenting on NBA Centel posts.
Yet another user wrote, “Absolutely impossible to be a good dad with 4 kids from 4 women and the NBA wants him to be the face of the league”. Given the presence he has created for himself at just the age of 23 years, there is no question as to why the league would want Anthony Edwards to be the next face of the league. He has already led the team to 2 consecutive Conference Finals, averaged 27.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 79 games this regular season, and keeps on drawing comparisons with Michael Jordan. Despite this, Edwards himself has admitted that the ‘face of the league’ tag is not something he wants for himself.

Why? Well, because, according to him, “Face of the NBA? Face of the NBA? Man, there’s a lot of s— that comes with that. Face of the league, all that. You know what I’m saying? I try, but I just—my people know—I just want to play ball, go to the crib, and play my game. I’m not really into all the other stuff, but they want me to get into it.” Yes, being the face of the league often subjects that player to a lot of scrutiny, and there is no way they aren’t placed under a microscope. Anthony Edwards is already facing enough of that and might not want more people to know about his business.

With any luck, he gets back his revenge by putting out a memorable performance in Game 2 of the Timberwolves-OKC series. Overall, the majority of reactions saw people united in complementing or acknowledging the roast towards Anthony Edwards. Whether this will continue throughout the season is something that remains to be seen.
