Ben Johnson Confirms Offensive Plans for Caleb Williams as Bears Draft QB Reinforcements

The Bears started the rebuild by drafting Caleb Williams first in the 2024 NFL Draft. But they also learned the team sport lesson the hard way. In 17 games, he finished with a 5-12 record, recording 65.2% pass completion in 3,541 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. But they were quick to understand the need. A head coach who can turn their fortunes around. And here came Ben Johnson from the Lions. He first started a wave of change at the Bears with free agency signings. Some things are still undecided.

On March 30, the NFL Annual Meeting, the Bears HC revealed the offensive plan for his signal caller. He said, “Listen, I think that’s to be determined. It’s a little bit different right now. Can DJ play inside? I think he can. Can Rome play inside? I think he can. Both those guys showed those traits last year on tape. To what degree, I don’t know yet. We got to hit the grass and see what they’re really capable of and what they do well.” This was his response to the fans, who wanted to know about DJ Moore and Rome Odunze.

These two are the main receivers of the franchise. They drafted Odunze in the first round (9th overall) of the 2024 draft. As a rookie himself, he gave excellent support to the rookie signal caller. In 17 games last year, he started 12 and had 54 receptions for 734 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns.

So that’s a good option that Ben Johnson can use to solidify the O-line for Caleb Williams. Another option he has is the veteran receiver DJ Moore. He has been a trusted player for the last two seasons. In 2024 alone, he had 98 receptions for 966 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns in 17 games (all started).

So Ben Johnson does have the options to use in the offense. But he still wants to go behind offensive pieces in the coming draft. As the former offensive coordinator of the Lions, that’s expected.

Ben Johnson aims to strengthen Caleb Williams in the 2025 Draft

Even for all the NFL mock draft analysts, they only have two people in focus, QB Caleb Williams and HC Ben Johnson. They have 3 picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, one in the first round (10th overall) and two in the second round (39th and 41st). According to ESPN’s Field Yates, all 3 will be used to add offensive players.

The projected pick at 10th place is the LSU OT/G Will Campbell. His agility in footwork and pass-protection will definitely help the head coach’s aim of improving the O-line. There’s only one concern. It’s about his 32⅝-inch arm length. But that doesn’t drop his stock too much. There are 2 more reinforcements for Caleb Williams.

After securing his protection, the Bears are projected to draft the Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka. He is a reliable player, as he set the school record for most receptions (205). The third and final person is Ohio RB Quinshon Judkins. Known for using his power, he also scored 45 TDs in 3 years of college football. So, there is hope for Ben Johnson and the Bears in the coming draft.

But things may change as we approach the draft. The HC must be placing all the pieces together to see the big picture: hoisting the Lombardi.
