The whispers have started, even though it’s not trade season yet. Baseball fans and insiders alike are buzzing about the possibilities, speculating about which big names might switch teams. And amidst all the chatter, one name stands out—someone who could shift the balance of power in MLB. The New York Mets are dreaming big, and so are their stars, Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor.
Enter Sandy Alcántara. The Miami Marlins ace is dominating the rumor mill, even as he is working his way back from his Tommy John surgery. But that fact won’t stop teams from dreaming about adding him to their team, especially the Mets! If you ask Soto and Lindor, they are all prepped up to welcome Alcántara in orange and blue.
Juan Soto didn’t hesitate or mince words. Speaking to the New York Post’s Mike Puma, he said, “It would be one of the best trades that we could have. I know we have great pitching here, but adding a Cy Young winner like that would be huge.” And he’s not wrong. Alcantara isn’t just any other pitcher, he is a two-time All-Star and the 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner. He’s the player who once pitched 228.2 innings with a stellar 2.28 ERA.

Now, here’s the catch: the ace is under contract through 2026, with a club option in 2027. This means he wouldn’t just be a rental for any team that acquires him. But at the same time, it’s also not that surprising to see other teams lining up for him. The possibility has also increased with the Marlines aka Alcantara’s current team, not being contention-ready.
But Soto simply views this as a wrong situation. “If he goes to a team that has a chance to compete at the end, I think you are going to see who he is. He is doing that on a team that has no serious chance to go to the playoffs, but he keeps trying and competing even without run support. Whenever he goes to a winning team, you are going to see what Sandy Alcantara is capable of,” Soto added.
Interestingly, the New York Yankees also had their eyes on Alcantara, with both Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil sidelined. SNY’s John Harper also confirmed that Alcántara was on their radar before the season began. But they realized it wouldn’t be easy to acquire him, and they eventually had to move on.
Of course, acquiring an ace isn’t going to be a piece of cake. Even Soto realizes that it will take a lot to bring the $56 million pitcher to Queens. But let’s be real—this is the Mets we’re talking about. Known for their willingness to splurge and Soto’s contract stands as sheer proof, owner Steve Cohen will likely do whatever it takes to build a championship-worthy team. In the absence of Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, they need an ace now more than ever. And Alcántara might just be their golden opportunity.
You can bet Carlos Mendoza would love it! And it’s not just Soto who’s eager—Lindor is also all in on making this trade happen.
Francisco Lindor joined Juan Soto’s excitement
Now, it’s time for what Lindor has to say. Joining Soto, Lindor also expressed his excitement with the idea of having Alcantara in New York. “It would almost be like adding Soto. You add Soto; it’s going to help the team. You add Alcantara, and it’s going to help the team,” said Lindor. The Mets already hit the jackpot by acquiring Soto and if everything goes well, acquiring Alcantara could be another game-changing move.
Despite undergoing Tommy John surgery, Alcántara has made a solid comeback. In his recent outing, he recorded a five-inning, two-run performance against none other than the Mets. Starling Marte also believes Alcantara has what it takes to thrive under the Big Apple’s lights. “He has the stuff and the mental makeup to be able to play in New York. He’s got the mental strength and physical gifts to succeed here,” Marte said.
However, there’s one major problem: Marlins president of baseball operations Caroline O’Connor insists that Alcantara is happy in Miami. However, if the Marlins get a good offer from the Mets, they might just listen. After all, they are not contenders this season! But whatever it would be, it’s going to be quite exciting to see where Alcantara eventually lands. Share your thoughts in the comments below!
