A sports enthusiast at heart and the Chicago Blackhawks’ biggest fan, Bill Murray couldn’t stop himself from witnessing the energy at Lenovo Center in Raleigh on Sunday. The “Caddyshack” star was there to cheer for the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team while they competed in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament. After all, his presence carried a deeper connection to the game – his son, Luke Murray, served as an assistant coach for the team.
To our surprise, it wasn’t only Murray who made his presence for the great show, but notable entities connected with the NHL showed up too! And, in case you are wondering who they could be, let it be cleared then—Doug Warf. With another unexpected highlight, he emerged as the one, who had nothing to do with basketball! Then what was he doing there?
The president of the Carolina Hurricanes approached Murray and offered to honor him with the Hurricanes jersey! Indeed, it’s a sweet gesture. Warf even shared it on X while posting a picture of himself with Murray. He expressed his desire to honor the great personality.
Thus, here’s what he revealed about Murray when he wrote, “He was gracious and funny, even after the tough loss for his son’s UConn squad.”
Well, the gesture seemed like a surprising twist because Bill Murray had been a hardcore Blackhawks fan!
I was honored to present Bill Murray with a @canes jersey at @LenovoCenter today. He was gracious and funny, even after the tough loss for his son’s UConn squad.
He wished the Canes the best in the playoffs. I think that makes this #legend a HUGE Caniac, right @TrippTracy ? pic.twitter.com/QAbVAxCWNG

Of course, he accepted the jersey with his signature charm. Despite the rivalry, he tried to be friendly, laughing it off with gestures. Not just this, in fact, he wished the Hurricanes the best in the Stanley Cup playoffs!
“He wished the Canes the best in the playoffs. I think that makes this #legend a HUGE Caniac, right @TrippTracy?” Warf wrote. Wait, did he just call Murray a Caniac? Well, he did! But of course, all in good fun!
After all, Murray’s deep-rooted love for the Blackhawks is pretty evident and well-known. Just a few months ago, when he was at the Winter Classic at Wrigley Field, he wholeheartedly cheered for his team in their outdoor showdown! And who could ever forget him joining the “NHL on TNT” crew and talking about his team?
But he wasn’t alone, though.
Bill Murray is a true hockey enthusiast!
Murray had fellow actor Jon Hamm alongside him who came to support the St. Louis Blues! It just looks so beautiful to see two legends expressing their dedication and love for their respective teams.
“It (the hat) made the trip with me to Los Angeles when I left St. Louis. I brought a blue one and a yellow one. Believe it or not this used to be blue…I took it out there with me and I’ve kept it ever since,” Hamm stated on the TNT show.
Both Hamm and Murray are longtime fans of their respective teams. While Hamm wore his well-worn Blues hat by sharing how it traveled with him all the way to Los Angeles years ago, Bill Murray proudly displayed his Blackhawks Winter Classic jersey and beanie.
“I couldn’t miss this [the Winter Classic] if I were having surgery. I would have come here for this. This is really a lot of fun. I appreciate you inviting me,” Murray expressed, stating there wasn’t any chance he could miss the Winter Classic event!
With humor and nostalgia brought to the broadcast, Hamm and Murray expressed their love and dedication for their teams. While Hamm reminisced about bartending for Blues players in St. Louis, Murray debated over some of the best hockey movies and admitted Slap Shot was his true favorite.
Now, with his presence for his son’s team and the Canes jersey becoming his collection, there’s no doubt Bill Murray remains a Blackhawks fan. After all, he proved how obsessed he is with the team already!
