It was that kind of outing against the Yankees that the Blue Jays’ $110 million pitcher would do anything to erase from his career highlights. After making an undesirable history in the third inning by throwing 53 pitches, perhaps he assumed things couldn’t get any worse from here. But unfortunately, they did. The veteran gave up 6 runs, walked 5 batters, and well, allowed 2 hits. As if the damage wasn’t enough, he also got ejected by the home plate umpire. Adding to the list, he also fell at the dugout stairs.
Ouch, that’s a lot to take for Kevin Gausman in just one single day.
To top it all off, the camera never fails to capture all the moments. As he stumbled down the dugout stairs, the YES Network cameras made sure to catch that moment. But no, the camera crew obviously didn’t know at first that he’s about to fall. The thing is, post his ejection over the strike zone, he made his way towards the dugout, and he was visibly infuriated. The Blue Jays’ pitcher was caught yelling in the direction of the umpires.
Kevin Gausman says he’s fine after a bit of a slip on the dugout steps following his ejection:
“As I was coming off the mound, I kind of let him know I was going to watch his bad umpiring inside… Didn’t see the stairs.” #BlueJays

It was home plate umpire Chris Conroy’s call to eject him. And as Gausman was storming off and mouthing words to Conroy’s ‘umpiring calls’, he tumbled down. Post-game, he addressed the embarrassing moment and stated, “As I was coming off the mound, I kind of let him know I was going to watch his bad umpiring inside… Didn’t see the stairs.” Gausman’s clip of tumbling down went viral on the internet. In fact, he was trolled quite a lot about his clumsiness on X. He eventually had to address it.
More than the Blue Jays’ painful 5-1 defeat to the Yankees, it’s Gausman’s ejection and the aftermath of it that have caught the most attention. From Gausman’s outing to his embarrassing moment, he’s topping the headlines for both. Do you think his aggression against Conroy’s ejection call was justified?
Past umpiring calls show why Gausman was upset.
The Blue Jays’ pitcher Gausman’s instance isn’t the first time that umpiring calls have caused controversy. Kevin Gausman didn’t flinch to voice his aggression over Chris Conroy’s ‘bad umpiring’ calls. Recently, the integrity of games has frequently been jeopardized by umpiring calls.
Just recently, on 18th April to be precise, the matchup between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cleveland Guardians was met with 24 missed calls by Chris Conroy. His umpiring career came under fire as he was blamed for making 24 missed calls during the game.
If you think it out loud, Chris Conroy is a veteran umpire who carries 12 years of experience in MLB. It’s surprising that, with his experience, he can still make mistakes. It affects the teams and their hard work. The Cleveland Guardians had the odds in their favour, and they won over the Pittsburgh Pirates by 10-7. But all the attention was on Conroy’s missed calls and how exactly they impacted the Guardians’ victory.
It impacted the win in a way that several speculations were raised over whether the results would have been different if the calls were made accurately. So, Gausman’s aggression could have been because of Conroy’s past controversies around umpiring calls. Conroy’s calls during Gausman’s ejection show that even experienced umpires can make mistakes.
