Blue Jays-Yankees Feud Set to Reignite Over In-Demand Trade Deadline Target

For years, the Red Sox were the thorn for the Yankees, a rivalry soaked in history, heartbreak, and hard-fought games. But in 2025, a new nemesis has emerged from north of the border: The Blue Jays. This one is eerily familiar for Yankee fans who lived through the Red Sox’s 2004 comeback, the 2018 beatdown, or the 2021 Wild Card embarrassment. Now, the rival might’ve changed uniforms, but the narrative remains the same. A confident, aggressive nemesis that exposes New York’s flaws on every level.

The Blue Jays are not hounding the Yankees on the field only. Toronto has reportedly reached advanced discussions to acquire multiple key pieces ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. And that might come at the cost of the Yankees, again! If the rumors are true, the Blue Jays shared their interest in an arm for whom the Yankees are also kicking the tires. If Toronto’s trade gambits pay off, this could be the beginning of a new era in AL East dominance. One where the Yankees are once again looking up at a rival who took what they wanted and made it sting.

“The Padres are listening on Dylan Cease, which inspired calls from most of the AL East — the Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Rays — as well as the Mets and Cubs.” MLB insider Jon Heyman updated the Blue Jays to the list of contenders for Dylan Cease on New York Post.

Cease has put up a 4.59 ERA over 21 starts so far this season. While he’s racked up an impressive 144 strikeouts in 113.2 innings, the 3-10 record is concerning. And so, as a rental arm, he should be available for a pretty reasonable price. So, if the Blue Jays can land Cease without giving up too much, it could be a smart move.

Not only would Cease strengthen their rotation, but it would also keep him away from other playoff contenders they might face down the line.

Meanwhile, the Yankees are feeling the heat to make a major move after dealing with a wave of injuries this season. Things got even more complicated when they designated DJ LeMahieu for assignment, creating yet another hole in the lineup. Now, with the stretch run approaching and the trade deadline looming, the team is gasping for some reinforcements.

Competition is brewing for the Blue Jays as well

It’s not that the Yankees are only facing the competition for their trade pieces; the Blue Jays are also sailing in the same treacherous water.

“A surprise name has emerged in the starting pitcher market: Dylan Cease, who will be eligible for free agency at year’s end. Perception of other teams is that the Padres are intent on making a push for the playoffs, and would use Cease to help fill other roster needs. Mets, AL East teams, Cubs among teams that have talked about him.” ESPN insider Buster Olney shared the other suitors for Cease.

So, even if the Blue Jays get past the Yankees to gain Cease, they might face the Mets.

The past couple of months have been rough for the Mets’ pitching staff. Injuries to Kodai Senga, Tylor Megill, and Paul Blackburn are pushing the team into frequent bullpen games. But now that Senga and Sean Manaea are back and healthy, the rotation is finally starting to settle in. Even though Cease isn’t having his best year, bringing him in would add another layer of stability. And could help turn the Mets into a real postseason threat.

Wait, there’s more…

The Red Sox are also in contention for Cease. For them, Lucas Giolito has looked better lately, and they’ve still got Garrett Crochet. But beyond that, the rotation just doesn’t have the depth for a full postseason run. So, adding someone like Dylan Cease would give their bullpen a much-needed boost. This can be a legit third option in the rotation down the stretch.

As Dylan Cease will be a free agent at the end of this year, the Padres will surely look to trade him. If they hold on to the $13.75 million star for a whole season, being luxury tax payers, San Diego would only receive a compensatory pick, that too, after the 4th round of the 2026 draft. So, as per rumors, they are making room for the payroll to get more young talent and prospects, trading Cease.

Now, where will he land in the end? For that, we will need to wait for a few more days…
