Brexton Humbled by Father Kyle Busch After Close Call Nearly Takes His Old Man Out of Contention

Kyle Busch might be finding it hard to navigate his way back to victory lane in NASCAR, but as far as dirt racing is concerned, he can keep his chin up. Rowdy isn’t a regular when it comes to dirt racing, but his son Brexton is running full-time at Millbridge Speedway, so he took a chance and hopped in the winged micro car. Can you imagine a 2-time Cup Series champion getting a beating by a 9-year-old kid? This was the scenario that played in Rowdy’s mind when he raced against his son for the first time.

B-Rex is a seasoned dirt racer and has bagged the 2024 Millbridge Speedway title. Before they even took to the racetrack, both father and son were involved in a social media banter. But fortunately, Rowdy had the last laugh. He might be an old dog, be he certainly learned a new trick. Brexton didn’t lack the skill or talent, it was the experience that came in handy for the RCR river as he revealed that Brexton had the opportunity to beat him.

Brexton Busch learned a few tricks racing against his father

“I gave Brexton a hard time afterwards, after the heat race. He started 2nd in the heat race, which was actually a prime starting spot. The inside doesn’t necessarily go that great, but the outside does. If you can clear off of 2, then it’s yours. He messed up and he ended up fading to 3rd in his heat. So he had to start behind me, but if he would have finished 2nd or won his heat, he would have started on pole or even right in front of me for the feature. I’m like, ‘Dude! You could have beaten me! It was all down to the heat race.’”

Like Cup racing, the track position played a key role in determining the outcome of the race. Brexton finished third in the first heats, whereas Kyle came from fourth to second in Heat 3. This determined the starting position for the A-main race with B-Rex starting seventh and Busch a step ahead of him ninth fifth place.

After a streak of yellows and stoppages, the race came down to the final 6 laps, where Kyle Busch briefly took up the second place spot, but he had to settle for a third-place finish. On the other hand, Brexton brought his car home, placing sixth. “It was really fun racing my dad. It was a good experience for my first time here in A Class. I thought I was going to have him, I guess not. I probably would’ve nerfed him if I got the chance.” The nine-year-old racer said after the race.

In NASCAR, we’ve seen Richard Petty race against his son Kyle Petty, then there was Dale Earnhardt competing against his son Dale Jr., who knows, a few years down the line we might see Kyle Busch locking horns against Brexton in a NASCAR race. In the meanwhile, Busch wants his son to develop his craft to be able to tackle the challenges in the big leagues.

What does the racing road map look like for Brexton Busch?

We have heard that Kyle Busch would retire from NASCAR racing when his son is 15 and he would compete with him in the Truck Series. Although he sold off his race shop and team, Kyle Busch to Spire Motorsports, KBM hasn’t really shut down, especially with Brexton rising through the ranks. But given that he’s just 9, there’s a lot of racing that will come before B-Rex jumps in a truck or a stock car. So what does that journey look like?

“We’re testing the legend car. We have already tested three or four places this year. You know Joey Ryan, we’re working with those guys. So his first race (legends car) will be at Hickory, May 22nd. So, we’ll run the Bandeleros, so the whole summer we will get him ready for the national race. And then we will throw in some charger races in there.” Busch explained further during the podcast.

So with Brexton now starting to shift to pavement, it looks like the original plan for Rowdy to retire after he reaches Truck level is still on.
