With the No. 1 overall pick in his hand, Brian Callahan is still thinking about moving some important pieces right now. Only a month until the 2025 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans remain committed to their plan, and Callahan is busy signing veteran free agents. And while the quarterback talks continue, a former NFL GM dropped a shocking update on the Titans.
Former NFL GM Mike Mayock appeared on The Rich Eisen Show today, where he discussed what’s going on with NFL drafting and trading. And when Cam Ward’s name came up, he pondered whether the Titans were going to bring in veteran QB Joe Flacco as a backup for Ward. The former Raiders GM said, “I don’t think there’s much doubt that Tennessee is going to take him [Cam Ward].” He added, “The only question is, will they go get a veteran backup? You know, will they bring in a Joe Flacco just to kind of help the kid learn?” And that’s a genuine question the Titans should be thinking about. Sometimes younger QBs, even those who performed exceptionally well in college, struggle in the NFL.
That’s why considering Joe Flacco—who has landed 257 TDs in his career—as a backup would be a great move. And why is it such a big deal? Well, Flacco has played a staggering 17 NFL seasons with a total of five teams. On top of that, he’s currently a free agent, with his last signing being a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts. But hold on a second—do we really think Brian Callahan is the only one interested in this veteran quarterback?
It would be a huge mistake for Titans fans to think that way because three teams are interested in Joe Flacco. And those teams are the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cleveland Browns, and the Minnesota Vikings. As we know, per an AP source, the Minnesota Vikings have confirmed they’re starting with JJ McCarthy, but they still need a strong veteran backup. Similarly, the Steelers, who have yet to name their starting QB, are eyeing Joe Flacco, along with the Cleveland Browns, who have nearly confirmed that Kenny Pickett will be their starting QB.
Now, just imagine Joe Flacco landing in Tennessee as a backup. Brian Callahan would be in a win-win situation at the quarterback position, with Cam Ward—potentially the No. 1 overall pick—dropping a ‘solidifying’ update on his future with the Titans.
Cam Ward clears the air on the No. 1 overall pick
Cam Ward showcased nearly all his skills on Pro Day, where almost 90 NFL personnel were in attendance. But, per an ESPN report, when Ward was throwing for a while, he interacted with Titans GM Mike Borgonzi and Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker. You wouldn’t be shocked, but what he said was cold! The gist of the conversation? ‘See you next month.’

Later in the day, when asked what he told the Titans GM, Ward reiterated, “I’m solidifying it today. They finally got to see me throw in person. That should be all they need to see.” He added, “But at the end of the day, I’m going to be happy with whatever team I go to. I’m just trying to play football.” While no one can say for certain which team will draft him on the first day of the 2025 NFL Draft, Brian Callahan has likely locked in his No. 1 pick, who continues to stand strong on his skill set.
For now, let’s wait and see how things unfold next month. Will Brian Callahan and the Titans comply with Mayock’s expectations? Or will they throw a curveball and go for a different prospect, given they need improvement in virtually every department? The anticipation is real, and with the draft just around the corner, anything can happen!
Buckle up, Titans fans—this is gonna be one wild ride!
