Titans’ GM, Mike Borgonzi, joined the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams on Monday to talk about his interview process. As HC Brian Callahan and the Titans are currently scheduled to make eight picks this draft season, the franchise has a special approach to selecting the prospects. So, what is it?
Well, revealing the same, Borgonzi on the show explained his and Brian Callahan’s demands from the prospects these years. He explained, “You want to get to just know the person, and I guess the hardest thing to do in this business (is) we’re all going to miss on the tape at times. But the hardest thing to do is to try to predict human behavior correctly. So, you really want to sit down with the person, get to know them, get to know their family as well. And then you know our scouts go through the school during the year. and do they love football, do they love the process.” So, for Mike Borgonzi and the rest of the front office, scouting is beyond skills – it’s about understanding a player as a person.
According to the GM, the NFL Combine is the first major opportunity for prospects “to sit down with the coaches. That’s the first time they (coaches) really get their hands on them (prospects), go through some X’s and O’s, and see if things align with what we heard during scouting—things like their football intelligence and leadership ability.” It’s a chance to determine whether scouting reports match reality.
For Brian Callahan and his team, player visits aren’t just about on-field skills. The team closely observes how prospects interact with everyone—from coaches to staff across different departments. Leadership, personality, and locker room fit matter just as much as talent. The franchise will evaluate these qualities regardless of a prospect’s draft position. Even if that prospect happens to be the potential No. 1 overall pick, Cam Ward.
Brian Callahan and the team won’t take any chances while drafting Cam Ward?
The Titans have possession of the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. And Callahan and Borgonzi aren’t in the mood to sacrifice their leverage in April. They have already attended Cam Ward’s Pro Day, accompanying him in his private workout, along with taking him to dinner. So, after spending some time with him, how did the GM and HC feel?
While explaining this about Cam Ward on the same show with Kay Adams, Borgonzi admitted, “He’s pretty much good at everything he does from what I heard, researched. He was a good basketball player. He was actually a good golfer…..He’s a natural at things he does so that was interesting to me.” Looks like congratulations are in order for Ward—he’s won over the hearts of the Titans! Even the GM also mentioned why he, HC Brian Callahan, and the entire team won’t miss a chance on him.
“I was taught over the years. If you find the quarterback that you want, and you think he’s a franchise quarterback, then you’re not going to pass on him.” Callahan was on the same page with Borgonzi on this thought.
A few days ago, Callahan shared the names of his shortlisted players. He named Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Travis Hunter, and Abdul Carter. So, the HC said, “I think anytime you can find a quarterback that can lift your football team and that you feel is the caliber of player you’re talking about, those guys are worth more. There is really no price on those guys,” while talking about his team’s choices.
No doubt, this year’s young players impressed both Brian Callahan and Mike Borgonzi. They have added (left tackle) Dan Moore and (right guard) Kevin Zeitler on their offense. Now, the franchise will continue this process by picking up some rookies this year. So, now, all that they are waiting for is the correct time to hit the golden buzzer.
