If there is any LIV golfer who has turned heads with his major appearance, it is none other than the golf sensation, Bryson DeChambeau. The 31-year-old, apart from garnering attention from the fans on social media, has also managed to stay on top with his performance. The California native clinched his second major win at the US Open last year, and what a win it was. He, with his close win, kept the winless drought for Rory McIlroy alive.
Well, after his win, he has showcased notable finishes, but still failed by the barest of margins to clinch the title. In the past 6 major appearances, he had 5 top-10 finishes, including two runner-ups and one win. Even for the 2025 season, The Scientist recorded T5 and T2 before stepping to defend the title.
But before that, golf insiders have shared crucial advice for him to consider before the US Open 2025. The struggle of staying close to the title but failing to clinch is obvious. Talking about that in detail, the Fully Equipped podcast had Kellen Watcon, Johnny Wunder, and Kris McCormack. Starting off, Watson praised the golfer, saying, “He’s going to be at the top of the leaderboard in major for the next five to ten years.” The golfer has been showcasing the best of his performance at the majors. With a decade of participation history, he has won 2x US Open and has 9 top-10 finishes.
But continuing, Watson pointed out, “He is looking for that one little last piece, and that is something that doesn’t exist at this point.” Further, he added, “I don’t think that he can maintain high on driver, 3, five wood, and then the long irons. Then you know, launch the ball considerably lower with the wedges.” At the PGA Championship, he struggled with his driving accuracy and the saves, which resulted in 9 bogeys and a T2 finish. DeChambeau had 46.4% driving accuracy and 50% saves at the tournament.
Suggesting that, Wunder joined, saying, “I think if you would step back and look at it from my angle, I would say that the wedge shaft needs to change.” He suggested having a soft handle that would reduce the dynamic range by 3-5 degrees, and that would help.
But it’s not just the golf world that showed worry. The golfer has shared his plan for defending the title.
Bryson DeChambeau’s realization from loss
The golfer, after having two close losses this season, expressed his emotions, saying, “I’m baffled right now.” Though only a few things went off the plan for him, and that is what he will change going forward. As the experts pointed out about the ball flight, DeChambeau has something similar in mind. He shared about the changes, “What I really think needs to happen, being pretty transparent here, is just get a golf ball that flies a little straighter.” The American professional has achieved an over 300 yards driving average, but his struggle to maintain the ball in a straight line is what affects the accuracy.
He shared the entire roadmap of change before the US Open. He said, “The ball sidespins quite a bit, and it gets hit by the wind quite a bit because our golf balls are just longer in the air. So I’m looking at ways of how to rectify that so that my wedges can be even tighter, so it can fly straighter. I feel like there are times where I hit wedges and it just over curves, depending on how high and how much time it is in the air, and how much spin is on the ball. So I think that’s really what I’m going to be looking at, now, along with some equipment stuff to just make myself a little more precise the next time, so we don’t have what happened this week happen.” With just a few weeks to go, the golfer will be defending and aiming to clinch his third US Open title. With the pressure, DeChambeau has also started to improve his game.
According to the update, the equipment is up in manufacturing and DeChambeau is all set to put in the hard work. But will these changes be enough to turn close finishes into a victory? What are your thoughts on it? Share with us in the comments below.
