ESPN analysts have never been shy about poking at Caitlin Clark, and All-Star Weekend wasn’t about to change that. Pregame, Clark was already in playful mode. She pulled on faces as Napheesa Collier dropped the age-old line: “I do think defense wins games.” Clark, the most loved offensive player of the W, shot back with a smirk. She said, “Good offense means good defense… the Defensive Player of the Year would say that…she has to.” It was a lighthearted banter, sure. But that tone flipped fast by halftime.
Team Collier was leading Team Clark by 22. All because of, you guessed it, a whole lot of “no D.” That’s when ESPN’s Elle Duncan called it out and said, “Well, again, we hope it gets a little bit more competitive, because like a girl’s trip to Cancun right now, there’s no D.”
Naturally, Caitlin Clark had to live up to her pregame bravado. With head coach Sandy Brondello already agreeing that she’d “give Caitlin the coaching hat,” the injured captain seized the moment. The cameras caught the squad huddled around Coach Clark at halftime. They strategized, and later she even sketched out adjustments with hand gestures. Because injured or not, Caitlin Clark isn’t one to take jabs silently.
