Cancer-Free Golden Knights’ Shea Theodore Recalls Horrifying Vacation Time With Wife

Recall the moment when Shea Theodore emphasized, “If you’re reading this article and you’re a young man, I can’t stress it enough: Know the symptoms.” He was discussing the testicular cancer diagnosis he received in the summer of 2019. This marked a pivotal moment for the Vegas Golden Knights defenseman, who was on the brink of enjoying a leisurely vacation with his then-girlfriend, Mariana Alston (now his wife).

This specific experience is one he will carry with him for the rest of his life. In a recent discussion with Scott Oake and Gary Lawless, showcased on Sportsnet’s YouTube channel, Theodore reflected on this experience, saying, “Yeah, I think what they found, you know, is pretty scary. I think the worst part about it, my wife and I now, is that we’re taking a trip around Europe for two weeks after.”

In 2019, for an individual seeking a respite from the intense hockey scene to enjoy family moments, the news surrounding him was far from positive. The defenseman reflected, “I had two weeks of an anxiety-filled trip around Europe waiting to fly back, and that was definitely tough, tough on me. But we got through it, and definitely special.” Having overcome cancer, he expresses gratitude for the process while acknowledging the vital support from those around him.

What truly transpired with the star defenseman? Similarly to his participation in the 4 Nations Face-Off, he was a member of Team Canada in the IIHF World Championship. Although it was a moment of pride for him, the impending news was set to lead to prolonged frustration.

After the tournament, he failed a drug test, revealing heightened levels of hCG, a hormone commonly linked to pregnancy but also indicative of potential testicular cancer in males. Theodore’s response was evident; however, with a measured approach, he battled cancer and ultimately emerged victorious after undergoing surgery.

Following his recovery from testicular cancer, Theodore candidly shared his experiences with the illness. His objective was clear: he aimed to raise awareness across the globe. What counsel did he offer to the public? “At your next checkup, you should ask your doctor if you notice anything. There’s no reason whatsoever to be embarrassed. Just DO it — because early detection is SO important. Early detection saved my hockey career. And who knows… if it had spread? I don’t even want to think about that,” remarked the defenseman of the Vegas Golden Knights.

The star defenseman has faced the terrifying reality of a cancer diagnosis, but given that it was caught in its early stages, he certainly escaped a dire fate! Theodore’s contributions to both his NHL team and the international squad have been crucial, in addition to his fight against cancer and spreading awareness about it. But he suffered a terrible destiny in the encounter against Sweden at the 4 Nations Face-Off, which kept him out of the game the whole time.

Shea Theodore’s recent injury and its impact on Team Canada

Team Canada kicked off the 4 Nations Face-Off with a thrilling overtime victory against Sweden, finishing the match at 4-3. In that specific game, there were notable concerns regarding defenseman Shea Theodore, who sustained an upper-body injury. What transpired during the match? In the second period, Sweden’s Adrian Kempe delivered a shove to the Canadian defenseman against the glass.

Even though it didn’t appear pleasant on video, Theodore had to miss the whole 4 Nations Face-Off because of this event, which turned into a nightmare. What were coach Jon Cooper’s remarks? “What a kid, and he only got to play six minutes. It’s heartbreaking for the kid. And he was the first one there at the door, high-fiving everybody when we came off. It’s a tough one to swallow because you just know how much it means,” stated Canada’s coach for the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Theodore was undeniably thrilled to don the colors of Team Canada, but his journey came to an abrupt end during the match against Sweden. But who took the place of the Golden Knights star? The individual in question was Travis Sanheim, a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers. Despite a challenging encounter with Team USA, Canada ultimately clinched their spot in the championship game by overcoming Team Finland.

In a thrilling showdown at TD Garden against Team USA, Canada executed their strategy for revenge flawlessly. In overtime, Connor McDavid’s decisive goal secured victory for the red sweaters over the American team.
