Canelo Alvarez Shatters Edgar Berlanga’s Remaining Hopes With a “Boring” Claim

A bout against Canelo Alvarez remains the crown jewel moment of Edgar Berlanga‘s fairly young professional career. Despite losing via a unanimous decision, he put up a spirited performance good enough to earn universal praise. The bout could have been a turning point in his career, but it seems like The Chosen One is unable to come out of that bubble.

In an interview with the Cigar Talk podcast last week, the Florida native eyeing vengeance shared his desire for a Canelo Alvarez rematch. The surprising thing: he was confident that he could earn that rematch quite easily. However, Cinnamon immediately shut down any speculations, making his stance on the second fight crystal clear.

Canelo Alvarez was not impressed

In a recent interview with Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger, the Mexican star showed his disappointment over his recent fights. He further revealed that the satisfactory fight he had was against John Ryder. After that, it has been disappointing for him, especially the Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga bouts. Canelo Alvarez believes that rather than bringing the fight to him head-on, they were only looking to survive. That is why the fights were boring. “To have a good fight, you need the both fighters. Have the same, ‘Okay let’s go’ and go and fight, not try to survive. Because it’s more all about me to do the good fight and the fight than the other fighter,” he stated.

Coppinger quipped, “It’s like you always say. If the other guy runs around, then you get blamed,” referring to the general consensus around Canelo Alvarez’s recent fights. The Mexican nodded and mocked the critics, “‘Oh Canelo made a boring fight.’ No right. I need, we are two fighters there, not just me,” Canelo explained.

Well, despite what The Chosen One thinks, Canelo Alvarez did dominate him throughout the 12 rounds, including knocking him down in the third round. For the Mexican star, it was a conclusive and decisive win, and he does not need to prove anything more. So, according to him, we are never getting the rematch. However, Berlanga thinks differently.

Edgar Berlanga: The biggest face after Alvarez

Last month, the Brooklyn-born puncher made a successful return to the squared circle and defeated Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz in the first round. Following that, rumors of a fight against Caleb Plant started floating, only to be shut down pretty quickly, as Sweethands will fight Jose Armando Resendiz on the same card as a returning Jermall Charlo. If the duo wins, it would put them on a collision course later on.

While everyone is fighting to become the second biggest face of 168, Berlanga believes he has already achieved that. “I am big enough to make any fight happen… My name is already cemented into the boxing world. And I’m the A-Side on any fight,” he confidently claimed in an interview with Mr Jay Hill Network. He added that “Besides Canelo, because Canelo’s the guy, he got all the belts. But besides that, Charlo, Munguia, Plant—I’m bigger than all of those guys. My name is different, bro.”

He discredited all the super middleweight top guys, referring to himself as the biggest challenger for Canelo Alvarez. He doubled down on those claims during an interview with Naji Chill and set his path for the desired rematch. “I just gotta beat Munguia. We fight Munguia, I knock Munguia the f**k out, he’s giving me that rematch. Because the fans gonna call for it. The fans know it’s unfinished business, that chapter with me and him is not closed, I promise you,” he stated.

Well, given how packed Canelo Alvarez is till 2026 because of his Saudi contract, the chances of an Edgar Berlanga rematch are quite slim. Regardless of what fans think, Alvarez has made it clear that he calls the shots now. And honestly speaking, Berlanga might be overestimating the fanbase rallying for his cause. What do you think?
