Come July 18, Canelo Alvarez will turn 35. By that time, as most believe, he will be done with William Scull and sitting pretty as super middleweight’s undisputed champion again. Two months later, he will travel to Las Vegas to face Terence Crawford. Per the four-fight deal with the Riyadh Season, that leaves two more fights slated for 2026.
So who will he face on the Cinco de Mayo weekend next year? Who will be the opponent for the Mexican Independence Day fixture? It still remains in suspense. From the rematch with Dmitry Bivol to the much-sought-after fight with David Benavidez, names have been circulating for some time. As much as the possibilities intrigue, there remains a question that has attracted the attention of a few. What happens once Canelo is done with the fourth fight? The Mexican superstar must have chalked out a plan. Does it include a final exit from the sport? His recent comments about his future have sparked a frenzy on social media.
Canelo Alvarez on retirement: stay tuned
The startling revelation emerged during an interview with TMZ Sports. Speaking about his upcoming fight against William Scull, Alvarez shared how his fight in Riyadh has been scheduled early in the morning so that fans in the US and Mexico could watch it. So the reporter asked, “Something close. Looking at your resume, Canelo, it’s crazy that you’re only 34 years old. It seems like you should be, like, in your 40s for how long you have been in the sport. Is there a time frame at all? Do you see how much longer you want to do this or just stay on top of the game as long as you can?”
The world champion remained noncommittal. Or he has yet to figure it out. His primary goal remains to enjoy the fights. “I’m want to see you know I always say like 37 or 38, but you never know. I enjoy the moment, but I’m still saying that like 37 or 38 around that, uh, but we’ll see,” Canelo emphasized.
The reporter checked whether he wanted to wait till he made it to the billionaire list. So Canelo replied, “Money never is enough, never is enough. Um, uh, in the sparring of boxing, I already accomplished everything.” The part about his retirement was then shared by the Instagram handle ‘topboxingnews.’ When they heard, a string of fans rushed to pen their thoughts and views in the comments section of the post.
Accomplished everything in boxing
As far as boxing goes, Canelo doesn’t have anything more to prove. “Yes, it will be sad to see him not boxing anymore, but he has nothing to prove,” said this fan. Out of the 66 professional fights, Canelo emerged victorious in 62. He fought some of the best in the era. Hence the statement is not far off the truth. Another fan echoed similar sentiments.
They said, “He’s earned it. Hi and enjoy his faculties while he still has them—and his ton of .” They highlighted one critical aspect of boxing. When his health and bank balance are intact, a good fighter steps away on his own terms. But if either or both are in jeopardy, the chain of fights continues, as most fans know.

One fan nevertheless, found an opportunity to thrust a jab. “Good, give it to someone who will fight the best in his own division,” they said. Obviously it was a swipe at Canelo not fighting David Benavidez. But the next one probably wants him to continue for some more time. “The king and face of boxing can retire when he wants today or in 10 years. Who cares? Canelo is already the legend …” Ten years from now, Canelo will be 45. That’ll be a bit far-fetched, though.
Another user wondered. What will happen in the post-Canelo era? “Now we will be stuck with fighters who fight once a year.” Now that’s another possibility. It’s been years since Canelo started following the two-fight format. But, on the other hand, there are champions who enter the ring only once a year! Are they taunting Terence Crawford?
The scenario, boxing without Canelo, is something many fans and pundits have already thought about.
Many wonder how the sport will move forward in the absence of one of its signature representatives. For sure, Canelo will go down as one of the era’s best boxers. If he secures wins over Bivol and Benavidez, his name will be etched forever among the all-time greats.
