Charles Barkley Admits Urge to Punch 67YO Director Despite Decade-Old Partnership for $78.78B Company

Charles Barkley, Samuel L. Jackson, and Spike Lee have been the heart and soul of the Capital One commercials. Their on-screen chemistry and camaraderie make it hard to not believe that they share a similar bond off the court too. And it’s no secret that these stars do, in fact, share a bond of mutual respect and admiration for each other. But what if we told you that there has been a situation where Barkley wanted to punch one of his co-stars from the Capital One commercials? Hard to believe? Well, Charles Barkley has himself admitted it in the recent episode of The Steam Room podcast.

The star in the discussion is 67-year-old Hollywood director Spike Lee. Fortunately for the lovers of Capital One commercials, the near physical confrontation between Lee and Charles Barkley was not about to transpire during the shoot of these spots that have become a March Madness tradition. As revealed by Barkley on The Steam Room podcast, the incident goes back to the time when Chuck was still playing in the league.

“I was gonna punch him in the face one time,” Barkley admitted. The 11x All-Star stated Michael Jordan had already warned him of the extensive workload that comes with Lee.

Chuck moved forward in the conversation and reached the day he had the Nike commercial shoot with Lee. “Spike’s standing out with a camera. I had to dribble a basketball and keep stopping, showing my feet. I did that, I’m not even joking, for three hours. And they only using the spot, like, a half a second,” Barkley revealed.

He admitted that Lee has a workaholic personality and is somewhat of a perfectionist. Admirable traits? Yes, but it was these qualities that got on Charles Barkley’s nerves. Especially because it yielded him just 0.5 seconds of productivity after hours of input. “I want to punch him so bad that day after dribbling around for three hours for a half sucker spot of my shoes,” Barkley admitted on The Steam Room.

Fast forward to the present and Barkley now finds it to be his privilege getting to know Spike Lee as a friend. No wonder that even after a major shake-up in the Capital One commercial, Lee and Barkley will re-appear in the upcoming spots during March Madness.

Roster change in upcoming Capital One commercials

March Madness fans are no strangers to the entertaining Capital One commercials that air throughout the tournament. For years, the iconic presence of Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Samuel L. Jackson, and Spike Lee has defined the campaign. However, this time around, viewers will notice a key member missing from the lineup.

Charles Barkley himself recently spoke about the change on Arizona Sports, expressing his enthusiasm for this year’s campaign. “They do a great job. I cannot wait… We add magic, not magic. We have magic… in Jen Gardner for the last 5 or 6 years. This year we have in Kareem. So I’m really excited about that,” he revealed.

Yes, Magic Johnson will not be featured in this year’s commercials. Stepping into his place, however, is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a basketball icon in his own right. With Barkley, Jackson, and Lee still part of the mix, it will be interesting to see how Kareem contributes to the group’s chemistry in this year’s ads.
