“First time I ever heard a crowd be stunned silent. And it was a play where he was running up the middle, and in a very small space, he did a 360-kinda turn and took off and scored a touchdown. And the crowd had a delayed response to that. It was the funniest thing.” Valor Administrator Jim Kirchner recalled the moment he was awestruck by a young Christian McCaffrey’s talent. Little did Kirchner know the one he saw on that field would come back to his school as an NFL star who has made a habit of silencing crowds.
McCaffrey, who now proudly wears an Offensive Player of the Year, 3-Pro Bowls, 3 First Team All-Pro honors, had already teased what was coming in those fields of Colorado. His time in Valor saw McCaffrey win back-to-back Gatorade Player of the Year titles. He still holds numerous Valor records for career points (848), career TDs (141), career all-purpose yards (8,845), and career TD receptions (47). So, considering the legacy McCaffrey left behind in Valor, it was just a matter of time before he was called back.
No, not just for advising those young Valor kids looking up to McCaffrey. The 49ers’ star running back came back to Highlands Ranch to be present at his jersey retirement ceremony. “For the first time in Valor history, we are beyond proud to retire jersey #5 in honor of Christian McCaffrey and all that he has accomplished on and off the field,” the school’s official X handle wrote. Seeing McCaffrey getting honored at his alma matter, his dad, who was present by his side, also expressed his true feelings.
On Instagram, Ed McCaffrey shared a family photo joined by McCaffrey’s pregnant wife, Olivia Culpo, and McCaffrey’s mom, Lisa. Ed wrote, “Couldn’t be more proud! @christianmccaffrey 5️⃣.” Now, Ed wasn’t the only proud one in the family. McCaffrey’s wife, Culpo, also shared her reaction to seeing her husband get the highest possible honor from his school.
“Yesterday was emotional in the best way. Watching Christian’s high school jersey get retired was a powerful, full-circle moment. One that reminded me of all the grit, sacrifice and discipline he’s poured into this game from the very beginning,” Culpo wrote on her Instagram. This jersey retirement ceremony marked Christian’s contribution to Valor. His influence and NFL stardom have allowed Valor to rise in prominence.
Even McCaffrey’s three brothers—Max, Dylan and Luke also played their football at Valor. “They were real leaders in our school. And really set the tone, set the pace for so many good things,” Kirchner claimed. So, when it was time for McCaffrey to get his due diligence, he couldn’t stop getting emotional.
Valor preserves No.5 for Christian McCaffrey
Mike Sanford, who recruited McCaffrey to Stanford University in 2012, was the man behind this pleasant surprise. Sanford, who is now the new head coach of Valor Christian, organized the whole event. “It means the world,” McCaffrey said in an emotional interview with Valor Eagle Eye Media. After the conclusion of the ceremony, McCaffrey also reflected on the pivotal role Valor played in his development.
“I think it was probably the most pivotal time in my life because high school is such a weird time in somebody’s life…When you’re at this school. I always felt inspired by everybody else. It shaped me in a million different positive ways,” McCaffrey claimed. Once Valor chapter was over, McCaffrey spent three seasons in Stanford. Playing for the Cardinals, McCaffrey snagged more honors under his belt. He was a Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and a two-time First-Team All-Pac-12 winner before getting picked by the Panthers in 2017.
After spending 6 1/2 seasons in Carolina, McCaffrey found his footing in the Bay Area. The 49ers brought the Valor out of McCaffrey, which wasn’t there with the Panthers. His best season came in 2023 when he led the 49ers to Super Bowl LVIII. Although he may not have won the Lombardi, it surely wasn’t the final time McCaffrey graced the Super Bowl steps. Fighting with constant injuries, the expectation is that once McCaffrey gets completely healed. He will be back to his explosiveness that turned heads in Valor.
