There’s nothing more adorable than a mother-daughter duo hyping each other up. Though Coco Gauff‘s mesmerizing makeovers hardly need anyone’s validation, her mother Candi’s comments only emphasized her glamor. And, it was only natural for Gauff to reciprocate. Having competed at yet another WTA showcase this season, the 20-year-old and her mother recently attended the Qatar TotalEnergies Open players’ party, and Candi’s stunning looks later earned an earnest response from her daughter.
On Monday, February 10, both mother and daughter attended the star-studded players’ welcome party in Doha. While the lineup included high-profile players like Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka all dressed up to the nines in front of the paparazzi, no one quite stole the show like Gauff and her mother, Candi. The former Florida State University track representative donned an all-black full-sleeved number while her daughter stunned in a striped jumper, paired with gold jewelry.
Subsequently, the duo later took to their respective Instagram handles to re-share the same picture of themselves posing together. While Candi sent her love to the World No. 3 by captioning the post with two red heart emojis, Coco Gauff reaffirmed her love for her mother with a one-word response. “Mama,” read her Instagram story caption, with a hand heart emoji.
Before the Qatar Open, Gauff was fresh off a disappointing end to her season-opening Grand Slam quest at the Australian Open. And despite spearheading Team USA’s charge to their second consecutive United Cup title and showcasing impressive form in Melbourne, she fell to a resurgent Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals. However, the 20-year-old hoped to start with a clean slate for the year’s first WTA 1000 Masters event in Doha, as part of the Middle East swing.
However, as luck would have it, she suffered a premature exit in Doha. The American sensation fell to Marta Kostyuk in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, in a shock defeat. The Ukrainian player needed just 72 minutes to vanquish Gauff. Though her Qatar campaign has concluded, Coco Gauff will still get plenty of opportunities to shine this season. Though she’ll have to be better than ever if she wants her dream of becoming the world No. 1 to become a reality.
Coco Gauff’s desire to top the rankings
Coco Gauff, currently ranked world No. 3, trails behind Iga Swiatek (No. 2) and Aryna Sabalenka (No. 1) in the WTA rankings chart. Though she has fallen behind in her head-to-head record against the Pole 3-11, in her record against Sabalenka, the young American leads the scorecard 5-4. However, the ranking point gap between her and the Belarusian sensation is pretty massive (nearly 2500 points).
Regardless, the American sensation wants to cross the Sabalenka hurdle and make it to the top. Speaking to the media, she made her thoughts on the prospect of being the WTA ranking leader clear. Although it remains in the back of her mind, Gauff is more focused on letting her performances do the talking.
In an interview with DAZN, she said, “Just improving and seeing where it goes. I think for me, it’s just the points thing is just, I think it’s, first of all, it’s too mathematical. I don’t know how people come up with all this different scenarios; like, it’s pretty impressive, but I just focus on trying to win.”
She continued, “You know the ranking comes with it, so just trying to do my best and win. Obviously the goal would be to be No. 1; that would be awesome, but it’s something I’m looking for checking every week to see how far I am.”
For now, Gauff will look to fine-tune her on-court skills after that disastrous exit in Doha. But if her past performances are any indication, it’s likely that she will make a strong return to the court in her upcoming tour appearances.
