Not everything is going well in the American clan at the 2025 French Open. The nation boasts some strong names worthy of title contenders in the form of Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula, and others. However, American hopes received a major blow as Taylor Fritz and Emma Navarro suffered shock first-round losses. Dubbed to dig deep in the tournament, the duo suffered contrasting defeats earlier today, to trim American hopes at Roland Garros. With this, the likes of Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, and Madison Keys will have to carry the American hopes forward in the tournament.
Earlier today, Fritz fought hard before going down against Daniel Altmaier of Germany in four sets 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in a battle lasting under three hours. On the other hand, Navarro suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. The American star had no answer to Bouzas’ domination as she managed to win just a solitary game in the entire match.
However, not all is lost for the American fans. In the women’s draw, the likes of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula will open their campaign tomorrow and are expected to dig deep in the tournament. While Gauff will take on Olivia Gadecki, Pegula will face Anca Todoni in the first round. Meanwhile, Madison Keys easily dispatched Daria Saville 6-2, 6-1 to move into the second round.

On the other hand, in the men’s section, the American hopes will now lie in the hands of Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton after Taylor Fritz was eliminated from the French Open 2025. Yesterday, Paul won his opening round match against Elmer Moller and will face Marton Fucsovics in the second round. Similarly, Shelton sneaked out a thrilling first-round win over Lorenzo Sonego and will take on Hugo Gaston next.
Even as the likes of Coco Gauff and Tommy Paul are still alive in the tournament, the American fans will have their fingers crossed. Recently, former tennis star Tim Henman revealed the biggest worry for Gauff going into the French Open.
Tim Henman on Coco Gauff’s French Open chances
Back in 2022, Gauff came close to winning her maiden French Open title but lost out to Iga Swiatek in the summit clash. Fast forward to 2025, the American sensation is No. 2 in the world and one of the favorites to lift the title this year. However, Henman feels that Gauff has to watch out for the past errors, which proved costly for her on big occasions.
Talking about it, Henman said, “I just find it very stressful when I watch Coco Gauff, so I can only imagine what it must be like for her. You know that Zheng match at night, she served 17 double faults, there were 45 break points, there were 80 unforced errors, the second serve and forehand were breaking down so often. She’s number two in the world! I just think with the mental fatigue and the effort it takes, you want to be on the court playing well and enjoying yourself.”
Henman was referring to Gauff’s semifinal match at the Italian Open against Zheng, which the American star won in a thrilling three-set encounter 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (4). If Gauff has to win the French Open, she has to find that consistency going into the tournament. Can she win her maiden Roland Garros title this year? Let us know your views in the comments below.
