Coco Gauff Surpasses Idol Serena Williams With Record-Breaking Feat at the French Open

The past few years have been interesting times for American tennis, especially in the women’s department. While Serena Williams was nearing the end of her career, a young sensation was rising up the ranks. It was none other than Coco Gauff, who has been closely followed by tennis fans ever since she won her first Grand Slam match against Serena’s elder sister, Venus Williams. Fast forward to 2025, and Gauff is already achieving feats not achieved by the younger Williams sister.

Earlier today, Gauff won her opening-round fixture at the 2025 French Open, defeating Olivia Gadecki in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. It was a dominant display from the young American sensation, as she made a positive start in her quest to win a maiden Roland Garros title. In the process, Gauff also set a unique French Open record.

After defeating Gadecki, Gauff became the youngest American player to achieve 20 women’s singles wins at Roland Garros in the Open Era. Having turned 21 in March this year, Gauff achieved this unique feat and left behind her idol, Williams, who won 20 French Open matches when she was just a couple of months away from turning 22.

Coco Gauff, world #2, defeated Olivia Gadecki 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the second round.

Gauff has had a superior French Open record, and Paris has been a happy hunting ground for the American sensation. She reached her first Grand Slam final at this very event back in 2022 but lost in the summit clash against Iga Swiatek. Last year, she made it to the last four before bowing out with a defeat against the same opponent. Apart from this, she also has a couple of quarterfinal appearances at Roland Garros.

Going by her recent form and past results in this tournament, Gauff has a golden opportunity to win her maiden French Open title. After getting past Gadecki in the first round, Gauff was proud of her performance and revealed what went right for her.

Coco Gauff battles tough conditions with a masterstroke

It turned out to be a windy afternoon when Gauff set out on Court Philippe-Chatrier to play her first-round match. Despite the tough conditions, Gauff kept her cool and minimized the mistakes to enter the second round. The double faults have been a cause of worry for Gauff over the past few tournaments, but she ensured that such errors didn’t get in her way in her opening round match at Roland Garros.

Talking about her win in the post-match interview, Gauff said, “I played as good as I could with the conditions, it was really windy. I knew it wasn’t going to be a clean match… it was tough on returning the serve, timing the ball. For sure, mindset first, then the footwork is the most important. It’s two different matches depending on what side of the court you’re on. I felt on one side I had to really hit the ball to get it past the service box, and on (the other side) I felt that if I barely touched the ball it would be a deep shot.”

With the opening hurdle cleared, Gauff will face Tereza Valentova in the second round. Can Gauff dig deep and win her maiden French Open crown? Let us know your views in the comments below.
