Conor McGregor has done it again! He broke the internet with yet another political move, and this time, he officially announced his presidential run. But wait a minute… Doesn’t this feel like what Manny Pacquiao did in 2022? The celebrated boxer decided to fulfill his dream of becoming the president of the Philippines at the age of 43. Although he didn’t really win the election, he succeeded in having a good political career as a senator. Even Kanye West, the American rapper had stood up in the 2020 presidential race. And now, ‘The Notorious’ has confirmed his stance to try and become the next President of Ireland.
When he met Donald Trump at the Oval Office on St. Patrick’s Day, the UFC star addressed some of the issues that the Irish community faces according to him. And that was the problem of illegal immigration. Of course, McGregor received the backing of many, while many others, including the Taoiseach, Michael Martin, criticized his move. Nevertheless, ‘Mystic Mac’ seemed to know what he was doing. And on 20 March 2025, he took to X and announced, “Ireland, the choice is yours and it is an easy one. Vote for me as your President and we will SAVE IRELAND TOGETHER!”
This was the former UFC double champion’s response to a tweet from a barrister-at-law, which emphasized the importance of Ireland’s implementation of the EU Migration Pact by 12 June 2026. And it seemed ‘Mystic Mac’ had already planned on how to make things work in favor of the Irish.
It didn’t take long for Conor McGregor’s words to follow into Instagram. CageCulture dropped the MMA star’s declaration with the caption that read, “Conor McGregor has officially announced his candidacy for the 2025 Irish presidential election.” And as expected, the entire world swooped down to the comments section to reveal their thoughts. Let’s see what the netizens had to say.
Netizens connect Conor McGregor’s presidential run with that of Kanye West and others’
Celebrities taking a step toward politics often have to welcome unwanted criticism from the world. McGregor and West were no different. Another thing where the duo matched was their partying habits. Well, West did promise ‘birthday parties’ for everyone. While the American rapper received only around 60,000 votes out of 160 million, netizens believed that McGregor might face the same reality. A netizen weighed in on this and wrote, “Irelands equivalent to Kanye’s run in 2020 .” In a reply to this comment, another account wrote, “not even close. Conor would get more votes to be the us president over Kanye.”
A few others decided to connect McGregor’s run with that of Pacquiao. The comment read, “Bro thinks he’s Paquiao.” However, there are examples like Tito Ortiz and BJ Penn, who found success as politicians. Weighing in on this, one fan commented, “Politics worked for BJ Penn and Tito Ortiz so he’s in good company!.” But the attacks simply kept on coming. Well, this one in particular was in response to McGregor’s rivalry with Khabib Nurmagomedov. The comment read, “As soon as he took office he would declare war against Dagestan.”
But ‘The Notorious’ couldn’t escape the fight fans speculating about his return to the UFC and finishing the two fights left in his contract. One fan claimed, “Guy will do anything to not fight again.” Another fan shared the feeling and wrote, “Yeah he’s never fighting again, and I truly believed he would for awhile but I see it now.” Meanwhile, one more fan believed, “Aka Conor has officially announced he will never be fighting again.”
