If there was anything resembling a David vs. Goliath kind of situation in recent memory, it would have to be the defeat of Gable Steveson by Wyatt Hendrickson. Apart from his wrestling credentials which include being an Olympian, multiple-time NCAA champion, former WWE wrestler, and a stint in the NFL—Steveson is most notable for currently being Jon Jones’ wrestling coach. So it was rather surprising when a former bitter rival of Jones came to Steveson’s rescue, following the immense backlash he received for losing to an up-and-comer.
This defeat provided the perfect opportunity for Gable Steveson’s critics to call him out for his unsuccessful ventures following his success as a NCAA Division-1 wrestler, and an Olympic gold medalist. One user on X didn’t hold back, stating, “From failed WWE star to failed NFL player, then deciding to return to college only to lose in the NCAA championship match.” Well, Steveson struggled after his Olympic gold as he was cast out of the WWE and was ruled out of the NFL due to subpar performances.
Responding to the X handle, Daniel Cormier furiously asked the user to take their words back, “You my friend are an idiot and I would like you to delete your account! Olympic champion. Things happen in wrestling it was Wyatt’s night bro. Like what are you talking about man.” ‘DC’ was there to witness the seismic shift in the event that unfolded in front of his very eyes.

Hendrickson pulled the biggest upset in the wrestling world of wrestling with his victory but this defeat for Steveson was more than just a simple loss. The Olympic Gold-Medalist left the University of Minnesota to pursue wrestling in WWE and then in the NFL, however, he failed to cement his status in both leagues. After his failed endeavor, the wrestler returned for one final trip to college wrestling to get back to his roots. His decision to get back to college wrestling was fruitful as he cruised through his opponents. However, Hendrickson proved to be the Kryptonite to his Superman.
With sorrow on his face, Gable Steveson admitted his defeat as Hendrickson became the NCAA Division-1 wrestling champion. So, what’s next for Steveson? Well, since he’s tried the NFL and the WWE, and is currently serving as the wrestling coach in Jon Jones’ camp, maybe his next stop is the UFC?
Gable Steveson might come to UFC after his other endeavors
The loss to Wyatt Hendrickson may have ended Gable Steveson’s college wrestling dreams, but what lies ahead could bring him greater glory than he could ever expect. After navigating his journey through WWE and the NFL, Steveson might soon embrace a new challenge in the UFC. The wrestler has always hinted at his willingness to fight inside the Octagon and the probability of him fighting in the heavyweight division is higher than ever. How?
Gable Steveson shares a pretty close relationship with the likes of Jon Jones and Bo Nickal. Steveson being in Jones’ camp was monumental for his victory against Stipe Miocic. Following his recent loss, ‘Bones’ added a heartfelt message for his friend after his defeat as well, “Proud of my brother. A loss on the mat doesn’t define anything; his work ethic, heart, and character speak for themselves. One of the hardest-working, most impressive young men I’ve met in a long time. Higher and higher we climb.”
Fighting under the UFC banner means Steveson will need to up his skills in the other aspects of the game, and having someone like Jon Jones as a mentor would be monumental in his journey. Several wrestlers, such as Daniel Cormier, Henry Cejudo, and Bo Nickal, have successfully transitioned to the UFC. If Steveson decides to join the promotion, Dana White could likely welcome him with open arms—if he plays his cards right, that is.
