It looks like nothing is going the way of the Boston Bruins this season. From poor form to having Brad Marchand—icon and last remaining link to the 2011 Stanley Cup—leave. As if this wasn’t enough, the Bruins just suffered their 31st loss of the season, going down tamely against the Vegas Golden Knights, potentially ending their bid for an unlikely Stanley Cup playoffs spot. Subsequently, a shocking statistic went viral on social media, which stunned the Bruins’ fanbase.
Following their poor performance against the Golden Knights, Scott McLaughlin of The Skate Pod posted a rather sobering stat. It was the third straight game in which the Bruins had registered fewer than 20 shots on goal. Furthermore, it was the first time that they did so since the league started recording this statistic from the 1959-60 season. Additionally, this was also just the second time when they went six straight games registering 25 or fewer shots. The only other time when they did so was in October 1998.
FINAL: Vegas 5, Bruins 1
Bruins held under 20 shots on goal for a third straight game. First time they’ve done that since the NHL started officially recording shots in 1959-60.

It’s quite the remarkable comedown for a team that had been one of the top performers in the league for many years now. But all eras come to an end, and with Marchand’s departure, it looks like that era has well and truly come to a close. It also goes to show how poor the Bruins’ form, which they are reeling from, has been. After all, the numbers don’t lie, and as far as statistics go, this is a pretty damning one.
They are missing Marchand and are now on a 4-game losing streak that could potentially continue to extend as they’re in the midst of a 5-game road trip. And when they do return to TD Garden? Of course it has to be the high-flying Washington Capitals and Alex Ovechkin who they face. Nonetheless, the Bruins’ shocking stats sent fans crazy on social media.
Fans call out the Boston Bruins as they hit a new low
Ever since Marchand left the team, the Bruins have duly missed a focal point in front of the goal. They have failed to replicate his production, and this is well demonstrated by their string of defeats. As a result, a fan lost hope in the team and wrote, “Can’t be close to even competitive in this league with ZERO center ice men!! ZERO. Better be addressed in the off season or it will be more of the same next year!!” The Bruins are also in danger of finishing at the bottom of the Atlantic Division and would surely have to go back to the drawing board if they were to have any chances next season.
While the stat highlighted a lack of attacking display in the Bruins’ game, one X user pointed out another concerning fact about their game. The fan said, “They miss the net a lot too, is there a statistic for that?” This also denoted a lack of shooting accuracy from the Bruins, another cause for concern for the coaching staff.
On the other hand, even as many fans were complaining about the team’s poor performances, one fan felt that such a downfall was required to emerge stronger. The comment read, “This is what we wanted , a complete reset … and this is what you get!” Nonetheless, the fan was confident that this was just part of the rebuild—and during a rebuild, you gotta trust the process.
Furthermore, the Bruins next face the San Jose Sharks later today. Despite the Sharks being the bottom-placed team in the Pacific Division and the entire league, it wasn’t enough to keep morale up for this fan. The fan wrote, “This depressing stat will still be relevant when they lose on Saturday.” If this does happen, the Bruins would reach another history-making new low, coupled with the ignominy of losing to a team that’s dead last.
Lastly, one of the fans complained that the tough times looked to continue for the Bruins as they lacked several key attributes. “There it is! I’ve been banging the drum that this organization was headed toward a pre-Chara situation… no leadership, no vision or a plan, no Bergeron-like player in the system. Dark times ahead,” said the fan, referring to the team’s dire state, before Zdeno Chara joined and began turning things around in 2006. Furthermore, the fan bemoaned the lack of leaders in the mold of their former captain Patrice Bergeron.
With the Stanley Cup Playoffs spot looking unlikelier and unlikelier, the Boston Bruins would look to reflect on their errors and scope of improvement going forward. Can they come back strongly next season? Let us know your views in the comments below.
