We all remember the dominance of the Yankees during the golden era of Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, don’t we? That team was stacked with household names who defined New York baseball and went on to become Hall of Famers. But there was one opponent who stirred real unease even in that confident Yankees clubhouse. In a candid revelation, Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees’ blue-eyed superstar, pulled back the curtain on who truly haunted their thoughts during those glorious years.
Well, there was a time when the baseball world basically revolved around just two teams, the Yankees and the Red Sox. From 2003 to 2007, these two powerhouses went head-to-head 94 times. The Yankees won 49, the Red Sox 45. Yes, it was that close.
Boston had some serious names in those days. Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez, but the player whose mere presence on the field left the Bronx Bombers second-guessing was none other than David Ortiz – the Big Papi. When Ortiz showed up in a Red Sox uniform, something used to shift.
In an interview with David Collado, A-Rod revealed every time Ortiz took the batter’s box, it instilled a sense of fear among the Yankees’ players. Unimaginable when you consider the Yankees at that time had Jeter and other big names. Moreover, we all know Jeter as the father of clutch moments in MLB, but A-Rod thinks otherwise. “The best clutch hitter in MLB history,” Rodriguez declared about Ortiz!
Ortiz hit the Yankees hard. He delivered in the biggest moments, so much so that even when Boston lost, they never looked like they were outclassed. And when he walked into Yankee Stadium? He stood tall amid the wins and losses.
Talk about his impact, before 2003, the Red Sox had a rough time in the playoffs against the Yankees, managing just one win in five games. But once Ortiz joined the team, things changed. Since then, Boston has gone toe-to-toe with New York in October, splitting their postseason matchups 7-7!
Considering Boston’s struggles in the ongoing season, it wouldn’t be unfair to say they need a Big Papi right now.
Boston Red Sox need someone to lift them up
Gone are the days in the late 2000s when the Red Sox fought on par with the Yankees. Currently, the Yankees are leading the AL East with a 37-22 record, while the Red Sox are in fourth position with a 29-34 record. Enough to sum up the sharp contrast between the two.
The Red Sox offense in 2025 has been nothing but inconsistent. And it’s showing in their record. Currently, they are ranked 6th in terms of total runs scored (289), and 10th in terms of BA (.252). In contrast, the Yankees are ranked 3rd in terms of runs scored and BA. This shows the difference between the two teams’ offenses.
Apart from their on-field performance, the Red Sox are also making some strange managerial decisions. Add to that a string of injuries and a league-leading number of defensive errors (17th in terms of HRs incurred). Now, you’ve got a team that is not only struggling to score but also giving the opponents extra opportunities.
What is needed here is someone like David Ortiz to take charge. The Yankees have got their next Jeter and Rodriguez in the form of Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm. But the Red Sox also need some inspiration. Alex Bregman would have been the best man, if not injured. The next is line is Rafael Devers and he is yet to find his form as a DH.
So, the struggle continues for the Red Sox, while the Yankees are soaring ahead. Will Boston be able to bounce back? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
