Derrick Rose announced his retirement and took out newspaper ads in each of the 6 NBA cities he played for. He thanked the community with the message beginning, “Thank You, My First Love.” Later, he articulated his relationship with basketball as his “constant when everything else seemed uncertain.” Now, we truly understand what basketball meant for the Bulls legend. After his retirement, he has rekindled his inclination towards another sport that even Victor Wembanyama endorsed.
“This will go over a lot of people head becuz they just don’t care.” D-Rose added to his Instagram story and vented how close the game of chess is to real life. The 2011 NBA MVP also added a caption in another story, “Get it now lol. Welcome to DZY 720.” Interestingly, the second story had a quote from author Allan Rufus that drew a parallel to the game of chess and life lessons.
“Life is like a game of chess. To win you have to make a move. Knowing which move to make comes with IN-SIGHT and knowledge, and by learning the lessons that are acculated along the way. We become each and every piece within the game called life!” If you think the chess connection ends there, then you are wrong. A few days ago, Pooh added an Instagram post to display his love of the game.
“I dream about this game. I’m obsessed with this game just like I was with basketball. Any time I’m feeling stress or if I can’t sleep I get on chess.com to relieve myself from that energy.” Ever since his retirement, Derrick Rose has amped up his love for chess. The last couple of days, he was in tune with the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour 2025, which was a week-long event.
Derrick Rose spends his time hyping up Chess and Magnus Carlsen
D-Rose has been a huge fan of the world’s No. 1 player. In an Instagram post, he has dedicated a few lines to the Norwegian chess grandmaster.”Peace and love to Magnus, Jan and Jason. Thank you! You are helping me show that I’m more than a Hooper and helping me show who I really am even tho hoop is in my name. It’s just apart of the story.” To showcase his love, Derrick Rose followed the Freestyle Chess tournament.

Day 1 did not start well for Carlsen, as he lost three games out of five, including two in a row. Later, he managed to win two games and a draw on Saturday, including a victory over World Champion D Gukesh. On day 3 of the event, Magnus Carlsen was able to beat Uzbekistan GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov in just 23 moves. But on Day 5 in game 1 of the semifinal stage, Carlsen lost in 39 moves! In the middle of the game, Derrick Rose tried to send support to his favorite “Day 5 of greatness come check it out.”
But that wasn’t enough to help Carlsen to make a comeback in the semifinals. Ultimately, he settled for the third spot and collected $100,000 for his efforts. Let’s not forget Rose announced his Chesstival’ tournament back in 2023, which is yet to kick off. So, there potentially could be a game involving Carlsen and Derrick Rose.
