Despite Early Exit, Emma Navarro Will Bag $88,000 From French Open 2025

Emma Navarro had a decent start to her season, reaching the QFs in Adelaide and Melbourne (AO). But then, there was a sudden drop in her form during the Middle East swing. However, the American came back strongly with a title triumph at the Merida Open Akron. Navarro secured a double bagel (6-0,6-0) victory over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango in the final. With that win, she also became only the fifth player in this century to win a WTA final by such a margin. Following that victory, Navarro said, “A 6-0, 6-0 is proof that there is not a single thing that needs to be fixed. After that, her best performances were reaching the QFs in Charleston and Strasbourg. Seeing those long runs on clay, her fans were quite optimistic about her chances at the 2025 French Open. But Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro had other ideas! She stunned the tennis world by defeating the world number 9 by a similar comprehensive margin. Although Navarro had made an early exit from Roland Garros, how has already earned a significant amount in this tournament…

Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (68) took just 57 minutes to outclass the American by 6-0,6-1 in the first round. If we take a look at Emma Navarro’s performance in the previous two major events, other than reaching the QFs at the AO, she also reached the SF in New York. At the 2024 French Open, she was defeated by Aryna Sabalenka by 2-6,3-6. Looking at her recent performances, no one expected her to go out so early. With this win, the Spaniard has now secured a 1-0  H2H record over Navarro.

If we take a look at her performance in this match, Emma Navarro was broken seven times, claiming just 30 of the 86 total points and she won just 44% of her first-serve points. Navarro failed to his an ace in this match but committed 4 double faults. However, despite this shocking defeat, Navarro will take home €78,000 ($87,583) and 10 points from this tournament.

Navarro has won $4,481,891 in prize money (overall) in her career, and this year, she has already won $953,517. As per the allotments, this year, if she had reached the second round, she would have won around €117,000 ($131,375) but due to her poor performance, she now has to leave ‘City of Lights’ with a gloomy face.

This was perhaps one of the biggest upsets at the 2025 French Open so far. Bouzas has mostly struggled this season, having a win-loss record of just 13-13. Her longest run this season has been reaching the QFs. What did she say after securing this massive victory?

Jessica Bouzas Maneiro reacts to her emphatic victory against Emma Navarro

The 22-year-old Spanish player made an exit from the 2024 French Open after losing her first-round match against Croatia’s Jana Fett in a three-set thriller. However, she showcased better performances at the next two Slams (Wimbledon, and US Open), reaching the third round. Even at the AO earlier this year, she made it to the second round. So far, Maneiro has won one singles title on the WTA Challenger Tour and her highest career ranking has been number 52.

Her recent victory over Emma Navarro has now put the American on the wrong side of history. In the last four decades, only two other women have conceded just one game in a match against a Top-10 opponent in Paris. They were Steffi Graf and Serena Williams. What did she say after this incredible win?

Right now I just feel really happy how I played today, how I was handling pressure and nerves for the first round here. Last year was tough for me and I wanted to do my best, and I think I did it, so happy for that. just think that everything is possible, I try to play my best every match. I have my team here, I knew that I have a lot of support and we prepared as well for the match as we could. Of course, I didn’t expect this score, this result. But yeah, I’m happy,” said the Spaniard after her win against America’s Emma Navarro.

Was it her first win against a Top-10 opponent in a major tournament? Well, before this, she had defeated Marketa Vondrousova (2023 Wimbledon champion) in the first round of the 2024 Wimbledon Championship by 6-4,6-2.

After this match, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro made a hilarious confession, saying, “It’s funny because my team just told me, ‘Is it possible to win a match in two sets?’ because my last matches were all three sets … and I was like, ‘I’ll try.’ So this one is for you guys, one hour.” One down, plenty more to come. How far do you think the Spaniard can go this time at Roland Garros?
