When it comes to the Rockies, anything can happen, and often does, in ways that defy any logical explanation. The team is currently inching close to breaking the White Sox’s infamous record for most losses in a single season. And just when it seemed like the front office was finally ready to turn the page, they’re reportedly looking to bring back a familiar name.
One, they just parted ways with. Yes, Bud Black.
While the baseball world buzzes about a long-overdue rebuild, the Rockies seem to be circling right back to where it started. And surprisingly, this is despite the call for changes from the owner.
“I think we need a new set of eyeballs,” Dick Monfort’s brother Charlie said in an interview with The Denver Post. “We need to give someone the opportunity. Someone who knows baseball and has lived and breathed baseball, and sometimes, died with baseball.”
Well, Charlie Monfort is looking for new leaders who will take the team forward, something his elder brother is also endorsing. “That’s not only Charlie’s opinion, it’s the public’s in general, and I get it,” Dick said. So, you would think the team will see a few radical changes. But hey, it’s the Rockies!

“Former Rockies manager Bud Black is reportedly a strong candidate to return to the Colorado Rockies organization as Director of Pitching. Black is said to be in the running to replace Steve Foster, who is leaving to become a pitching coach at Texas Tech,” MLB insider Christian Saez wrote on X quoting Bob Nightengale.
Well, the Rockies recently parted ways with their longtime manager Bud Black. But that might not be the end of his story in Colorado. If the rumors are true, Black could be making a return in a different role. Possibly as the team’s new director of pitching. That position is expected to open up soon, as current director Steve Foster is reportedly heading to the college ranks to take over as pitching coach at Texas Tech.
Black, who spent eight seasons managing the Rockies before his exit, might not be done in Denver just yet. As for the team, they’re sitting with a brutal 17-60 record this year. Do you think Black’s return would help the Rockies?
The Rockies are rewriting the record book
Surprised? Well, the Rockies seem to rewriting the record book for having the worst season in the history of MLB. At least their current trajectory looks like they are well on the route. They have already set a few records through their first 59 games.
According to ESPN, no team in modern MLB history (since 1901) has started a season worse than the Rockies have. For the unversed, they’ve lost all 19 series they’ve played through the first 59 games. That’s a record!
Moreover, the Rockies have conceded their 10th sweep of the season within 59 games. That again puts them in some pretty infamous company, tying them with the 1962 Mets, the 1970 Brewers, and the 1994 Athletics for the most sweeps through 20 series. The Rockies are now the third-fastest team ever to hit 50 losses. Only the 1884 Kansas City Unions and the 1876 Reds got there faster.
While Black is rumored to return as the director of pitching, the Rockies fans have nothing but to wait and watch if the team can avoid the unwanted record this year.
