It seems there is no end to Coco Gauff’s ‘double trouble’ at the moment! So far, Gauff has played almost close to 50 matches this season, and guess what? She has already committed more than 250 double faults. She had to overcome 23 double faults to win her first round (R64) match against Danielle Collins at the 2025 Canadian Open. With that horrible stat, Gauff earned a spot (fifth) in the highest double faults ever recorded in a WTA Tour match. Previously, her record was committing 21 double faults in two different matches at two different events (2024 Wuhan Open and 2025 Indian Wells).
After her match against Collins, Coco Gauff admitted, “It was a frustrating match for me.” She spoke about how she felt good enough with her serves while practising and claimed, “Hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way and I can come back stronger in the next round.” But sadly for the American, she faced a similar fate in her next match as well! Gauff committed 14 double faults in her 4-6,7-5,6-2 win against Veronika Kudermetova. So, if we sum up, that’s 37 double faults in her two matches at the 2025 Canadian Open!
But keeping this thing aside, her incredible resilience to fight back, despite not being in her best form, has truly been impressive so far. How does she look at all these things? In her post-match press conference, Coco Gauff said, “Yeah, I mean, there are positives and there are negatives. I mean, obviously, I am like so disappointed in myself when it comes to that part of the game, just because I didn’t play DC to work on that and make changes to that, and doing well in practice and serving really well in practice. So I just would like for it to transfer to the match.” She believes if she gets these things right, it’d become a lot easier for her.
Furthermore, in that same press conference, when she was asked if this is something that worries her now, or does she likes to keep these things aside, Coco Gauff said, ” I don’t want to live that stat and I want to do better. I know probably I won’t be ever like double fault free, but I can get that to like 2 per set, 3 per set, it would make a big difference in just making these matches a lot easier.” However, despite all these struggles, she claims that she finds a bit of positivity amid these ‘ugly wins’. Being a tough critic on herself, Gauff admitted that she knows she can do much better and also assured her fans that it’ll get better with time.
