It’s always important to take breaks in between races, whether recreational or promotional. Fans have seen Kyle Busch race his son Brexton, Chase Elliott watching the Super Bowl and of course, Dale Earnhardt Jr. throwing wild parties when he was a racer! But, Ryan Blaney took a different route, something in the middle ground… let’s say promo-creational activity!
Ryan Blaney was off on a wrestling adventure. The off-track excursion took place as part of a promotional tour ahead of NASCAR’s Mexico City race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Cup Series drivers Christopher Bell, Daniel Suarez and Chase Elliott were also in attendance, and the four racers attended a wrestling match of the Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, a professional wrestling promotion. However, it didn’t stop there, as the Team Penske driver also took the ring to square off against his rivals on the stage.
In a hilarious video uploaded on social media, Blaney can be seen trying out a wrestling move while wearing a mask. The racer was hitting the ropes before falling hard, prompting many fans to blame John Cena for the incident.
Ryan Blaney takes on Suarez inside the wrestling ring
Ryan Blaney’s interest in wrestling is well known. The Team Penske driver has been seen in the company of Triple H on WWE Smackdown, and the racer also hosted Rey Mysterio in the Glass Case of Emotion Podcast a few years ago. Given his history, it should come as no surprise that the No. 12 Ford Mustang driver was seen inside the ring in Mexico City while wearing a mask and attempting wrestling moves. The 31-year-old is seen running the ropes. While he successfully runs off the first rope, he is seen falling flat on his back after hitting the second rope. Let’s just say, running chest-first or side-chest first into the ropes is not the best way to run ropes! In an air of humor, Blaney went on to post the video on X with a caption, “Can’t believe they edited out the Luchador that laid me out….”
The apparent ‘invisible’ Luchador isn’t the only one who made a wrestling move on Ryan Blaney. Trackhouse Racing driver, Daniel Suárez also took the ring against his Team Penske opponent and went on to jump off the ropes before body slamming the 2023 Cup Series champion. However, the two drivers were just play-fighting, and they were seen sharing a laugh afterward. The Mexican racer uploaded a post on social media showing Blaney lying on the stage while Suarez jumped towards him, accompanied by the caption, “From burnouts to body slams.”
The trip to Mexico wasn’t all fun and games, though. Blaney, Suarez, Bell, and Elliott were seen taking a trip to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez ahead of June’s inaugural Cup Series race. It’ll be the first time NASCAR will be hosting a points-paying event outside the United States since 1958, and the excitement for the one-off spectacle is at an all-time high. The last time NASCAR hosted a race internationally was in Japan in the 90s, however, it was nothing more than an exhibition event.

With the wrestling adventure over, Ryan Blaney, along with the rest of the Cup Series stars, will shift their attention to the upcoming race at the newly overhauled Circuit of the Americas. From wrestling against each other to battling it out on the track, the NASCAR drivers are letting their competitive spirit shine now that the season is well and truly underway. While fans are coming up with bizarre tongue-in-cheek theories about John Cena’s involvement in Blaney being laid out on the ring, the racer will turn his attention to Austin, Texas, where he will hope to secure the first win of his season.
Fans blame John Cena for Blaney’s embarrassing wrestling fail
Unfortunately for John Cena, while Ryan Blaney was busy attempting to become an amateur wrestler, the WWE superstar was being blamed for his on-stage incidents. Watching the Team Penske driver fall after hitting the ropes prompted many to blame the 16-time world champion, even though the Massachusetts native was not associated with the incident in any way. Taking the words, ‘You can’t see me’ literally, an X user wrote, “D-mn it John Cena!” after Blaney fell inside the ring. Since the event was held at Mexico City, a fan used clever wordplay to write, “Juan Cena could not be reached for comment.”
Responding to Blaney’s joke about being taken out by a Luchador by the footage that was taken out of the video, a fan wrote, “They didn’t edit it out, that was the legendary Luchador known as John Cena. So extraordinary in the ring, that you can’t see him…” Another fan went on to say, “@JohnCena works in mysterious ways”, perhaps insinuating that the wrestler took on the form of the rope that caused Ryan Blaney to fall flat on his back.
Echoing those sentiments, another fan wrote on X, “Laid out by John Cena ”, playing along with the rest of the Ryan Blaney fans by blaming the actor/wrestler for taking down the Team Penske star. Despite it all, it seems like the 2023 Cup Series champion had a blast in Mexico City in the company of his colleagues. While the action may have taken place in the wrestling ring in this instance, the drivers will be attempting to take each other out inside their cars at COTA in the upcoming race in Austin, Texas.
