Dodgers Told to Pursue $56M Cy Young Winner Also in Yankees Radar Amid Mounting Injury Crisis by MLB Analyst

The Los Angeles Dodgers seem to be out of sync at the moment. Nothing is clicking for them right now as the injury crisis continues to plague them. What looked like a single setback quickly turned into a disaster, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the Dodgers will get a break soon. Injuries have marred their lineup, and the list keeps growing with Tyler Glasnow and now even Blake Snell and Blake Treinen. Now, amid the injury woes, the Dodgers have been linked with a former Cy Young winner worth $56 million.

But who is this player being linked with the Dodgers right now?

It seems like a positive update for the team amid their mounting injury problems. MLB analyst Greg Amsinger’s revelation of the ongoing discussion between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Miami Marlins’ ace, Sandy Alcantara, comes as a surprise. Although it’s way too early to judge anything, the recent talks have heightened speculations of a possible trade sooner than expected.

Do you think that’s going to happen?

Well, Sandy Alcantara is now the ‘belle of the ball’, at least for the Dodgers. The trade talks are gaining traction, and it definitely makes a lot of sense, given the ongoing issues that they are facing because of the lineup being rattled. More importantly, the Marlins aren’t even making the right use of Sandy Alcantara, who is immensely talented. He had a stellar 2023 season, where he went 7-12, but his 4.12 ERA, 28 G, 184.2 IP, 151 strikeouts, and 1.21 WHIP were standouts.

The Dodgers are without their starter, Blake Snell, which makes Alcantara a great bet for them. However, being one of the most sought-after right-handed aces available in the market, the Yankees are also in the hunt for Alcantara. MLB insider and analyst Bob Nightengale opened up on the Yankees pursuing Alcantara, saying, “I think they’ll trade him, probably late July…someone is going to have to give up a tonne. As much as the Padres gave up for Juan Soto, it may cost a team more than that. I think you’ll have the Yankees doing everything possible.” The reason for such aggression could be Alcantara pairing with Max Fried, and it would create wonders for the team.

That’s perhaps the reason behind the Dodgers facing some challenges getting him on their roster. The Miami Marlins would leave no stone unturned to get a hefty price. Not to forget that in case Alcantara acquires something above a 6.00 ERA, the Marlins will be in deep trouble to trade him. A lot of questions still remain about whether the Dodgers would like to get another starting pitcher in their lineup; that, too, someone who had a history of injury, right?

Not to underestimate the pitching coaches of the Dodgers, who literally turn ashes into gold. It’s too early to say whether the Los Angeles Dodgers will get Alcantara or not, but yes, he still remains one of the most preferred aces that every team will be looking for. But why is it so?

Why is Sandy Alcantara in demand?

Well, it’s a tough question to answer. But yes, it cannot be denied that despite the injury that kept the former Cy Young winner out the entire 2024 season, his record, on paper, looks massive. And even after missing the 2024 season, he came with a bang in 2025, going 2-2 with a 6.56 ERA, 5 Gs and, most importantly, 17 strikeouts already with a 1.33 WHIP. While the Dodgers are looking to fill the gap in their roster after missing out on their starters due to injuries, the Yankees want to pair Sandy Alcantara alongside Max Fried. His ability to pitch for longer stretches makes him perfect as a starter. But there’s another team also looking for him—the Chicago Cubs, maybe?

The Cubs are reportedly interested in Alcantara, given that he has two wins and zero losses under his belt at the moment. The 29-year-old pitcher has made a strong comeback this season as well. But the main problem lies in that the Cubs have to wait until the closure of the trade deadline. As per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Major League Baseball, the Marlins won’t let him go so easily and the other teams may have to wait patiently until making the final call.

Besides the Cubs, the Boston Red Sox have also been rumored to be in pursuit of Alcantara, creating a bidding war for his services. The Red Sox have put a deal on the table for the Miami Marlins, wanting to get Sandy Alcantara in exchange for Hunter Dobbins, Franklin Arias, and Ceddanne Rafaela. That says a lot about his calibre and the demand he is currently having in the market.

We all have to wait until something happens. Till then, stay tuned with us for more updates.
