After losing the 8th hole, Schmelzel made a quick restroom break and discovered her skirt’s zipper was broken. “I’m fuming, right?” she said. “I’m like, f**king the skirt. I lost the hole, so I’m 2 down again.” She asked her caddie, Pat Hurst, “Can we get another skirt out here?” and threw on rain pants in the 87-degree heat. Schmelzel’s frustration turned to amusement as she recounted how she declined a pair of pants on the 10th hole, saying “I don’t want pants. I want my skirt,” only to later decline a new skirt on the 11th hole, saying “I don’t want the f**king skirt; I’m gaming right now!”
Schmelzel eventually won the 10th hole, and on the next hole, someone brought her a new skirt. However, she was on a roll and didn’t want to change, joking about the rain pants clinging to her body. She said, “Give me the skirt. The rain pants are like clinging to my body. I was so fired up, I was convinced that if I took these rain pants off, I wasn’t going to keep winning holes.”
Despite the setback, Schmelzel’s team won, and she had a strong Solheim Cup debut, although she ultimately lost her singles match 1 up to Sagstrom. Well, this incident with Schmelzel isn’t the first of its kind.
