At UFC Seattle, fans were left concerned when the announcer’s voice cracked mid-scorecard, struggling through the fight announcements. Popular MMA creator Spinnin Backfist took to X, commenting, “Hopefully the GOAT Bruce Buffer is okay. Seems off tonight.” Fast forward to UFC Mexico, and it appears little has changed. However, this time, there were no voice breaks but an error in announcing which caught the MMA community off guard.
Dedicating three decades to your art is not a small task in this economy, but it was just a small feat for Burce Buffer’s glorious career. However, after years of service, it appears that Buffer’s golden voice is finally breaking. At the UFC Mexico, the announcer made a huge blunder when he called out the winner for the Jamall Emmers vs. Gabriel Miranda fight. How, you may ask? Well, instead of calling Jamall Emmers’s name, Buffer called, “Gabriel ‘Fly’ Miranda” as the winner.
This is the second instance, following the UFC Seattle fallout, where Bruce Buffer has made such a mistake. All great runs eventually face the test of time. Rumors are swirling that Buffer’s remarkable career could be nearing its final round, with age possibly catching up to the veteran announcer. Notably, despite his success, Bruce Buffer was not the UFC’s first choice for an announcer.
It was fate that forced Bruce Buffer to voice for the UFC as initially it was his brother Michael Buffer who was planning to announce the fights, however, Bruce intervened to make sure to carve a path for himself. While speaking with Ariel Helwani, Buffer highlighted that he had to bring former MMA fighter Scott Ferrozzo with him to announce the UFC fights in Puerto Rico.“I brought him (Scott Ferrozzo) down. I called up Meyrowitz and said, ‘Robert, I’m bringing my tuxedo in my bag. Let me announce the prelims.”
He further added, “Let me show you what I’ve got.’ The night before the show, he said, ‘You know what, you can announce the prelims.’ That’s exactly what I wanted to do. That’s the only reason I went down there.” Why Scott Ferrozzo? Well, Buffer used the former fighter as a stepping stone to get close to the top management of the UFC.
Scott Ferrozzo was managed by Bruce Buffer at the time of his fight on the Puerto Rico card, and when he stepped into the Octagon for his debut at UFC 8 on February 16, 1996, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Buffer seized the opportunity to propose the idea of becoming the UFC’s Octagon announcer. This was the beginning of the legendary career that spanned three decades, but it appears that Buffer might need a break right now.
Fans are worried as Bruce Buffer makes yet another mistake
Starting off, a social media user emphasized that the UFC should completely replace Bruce Buffer with UFC announcer Joe Martinez:“Bruce Buffer is washed I speak for everyone when I say we want Joe Martinez to permanently announce fights.” However, one must remember that Martinez is reportedly sick and has been replaced by Charly Arnolt, making her the first female UFC ring announcer.
Furthermore, another fan emphasized that he messed up the Manuel Torres vs. Drew Dober fight as well, “He just messed up Manuel Torres’ record too lmaoo said he only had 1 loss but has 3.” Is it really the time for Bruce Buffer to retire from the sport? A fan thinks so, “Bruce it’s actually time to retire.”
A fan came to the defense of Buffer, stating that this was the first time in three decades he had made such a mistake. “That’s a first. Crazy! He must be livid with himself right now. Even the greats make mistakes.” Last but not the least, after a barrage of criticism, Buffer finally found some support from a fan: “I’ll take Buffer f—– up over any of the other announcers. He’s the one announcer who doesn’t sound like he’s trying to molest the words he’s saying.”
With back-to-back mistakes from Bruce Buffer, is there anything the star announcer is hiding from the fans? Well, we don’t know for now, but time will reveal it. Given that, what are your thoughts on the hubbub? Could the octagon soon echo without the signature roar of Bruce Buffer?
