Ex-Mets GM Claims Yankees Shot Themselves in the Foot with Costly Pitching Gamble

Another day, another drama in the Bronx! The Yankees aren’t catching a break—firstly, their never-ending list of injuries—and now they seem to be making bad calls with pitching options too. Call it bad luck or a simple mistake. The ex-Mets manager feels that the Yankees are making a big gamble that may not pay off ultimately. Sounds true?

The New York Yankees are going through some tough times, as they lost some key players, including Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Gil, and DJ LeMahieu. But that didn’t end there, as their pitcher, Gerrit Cole, has been the latest player in tragedy. As per reports, he would likely miss the entire 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery, whom the Yankees signed for a hefty nine-year, $324 million contract in 2019. So, what’s the problem all about?

Amid the challenges faced with the season-ending absence of their ace pitcher, a need for leadership in the starting rotation has emerged. Now on March 13 on SNY TV, former New York Mets’ manager Zack Scott has his say on spending huge on the contracts on starting pitching and the challenges that the Yankees may experience. He said, “Having a big contract like Gerrit Cole, throwing more money at Max Fried and Carlos Rodón—they’re compounding the risk so much eventually that catches up with them.” Scott’s words cannot be ignored, as it’s true that despite spending huge on Cole, he will not be playing the entire 2025 season. But that’s not all!

Scott even mentioned the names of high-end starting pitchers like Max Fried and Carlos Rodon, who have deals valued at $218 million and $162 million, respectively. That’s massive, isn’t it?  Although Rodon might bring some stability and depth to the rotation alongside Max Fried, it’s still a risky move to consider high-priced free agents. However, Zack Scott suggested having enough resources and young talents, which could be helpful for maintaining significant balance in the roster; however, that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

However, the New York Yankees have shown interest in some new players. So who are they?

The Yankees are likely to make some useful additions amid their injury scare

Considering the huge amounts spent on players, and then they end up injured, it’s time for the Yankees to pull off some moves that can provide their captain, Aaron Judge, a major boost. As per a post shared by MLB insider Mike Rodriguez, Brian Cashman is willing to get the services of Dylan Cease, Erick Fedde, and Sandy Alcantara. But there’s also a chance that they get back looking for Michael King or Sonny Gray, which could give them the much-desired support and balance in the lineup that they are looking for. But that’s not all!

Aaron Judge seems to prefer Sandy Alcantara among these three, as he has shown great signs of throwing fastballs that average 99 mph and few even touching that 100 mph mark, which is great. As the Yankees, just like other teams, are looking for an elite arm, the Yankees’ front office needs to be active enough to get the 29-year-old pitcher as quickly as possible. Not only could this increase the hopes for the Yankees, but it would also help Judge to proceed with a good lineup, despite missing the key players, and lift the World Series title too.

Who, according to you, is maybe the best bet for the Yankees amid the injury-ridden lineup? Let us know in the comment below.
