As Micah Parsons gets embroiled in a heated debate over his commitment to football, it seems like he is not alone! Former NFL legend and sports analyst Keyshawn Johnson has come forth in his defense. He strongly called out those critics who vehemently questioned the Dallas Cowboys star’s social media activity and podcast. Shutting down the criticism, he has one big question to ask – Why do you care?
In a recent Instagram post of speakonfs1, which is run by SPEAK, a daily sports show that gives unique perspectives on alluring sports stories, it explores Keyshawn Johnson’s defense of Parsons.
The caption reads, “Keyshawn defends Micah Parsons for having his podcast & being active on social media.” Johnson wasted no time breaking down how athletes are no robots. He adds, “Everyone has a life outside of football. Okay. That’s just the bottom line or sport in general.”
The way Johnson sees it, he emphasises that as long as Parsons shows up and dominates on Sundays, the monopoly of his free time is no one’s business. He adds, “And if it’s not affecting your play 100% on the field or on the court or the diamond or the soccer field or whatever it is, why does it matter?”
One of the major criticisms remains regarding his podcast, “The Edge with Micah Parsons.”
Some claim it’s a distraction, but Johnson disagrees. He remarks, “I’m assuming he’s doing most of his podcasts probably on an off day, on a Tuesday.” In classic Keyshawn fashion, he addressed the ridiculousness of the criticism. “Why the hell do you care? Why do you care? Why, why do you care?” he retorts.
And let’s not forget—NFL careers have a limit. Players need to attune themselves to a life after the game. Johnson reflects, “’Cause they always talk about, you know, always teaching me, telling me life after football. League’s not going to be around for long. It’s an assembly line. One gets off, one gets on.”
He further discussed the backlash that Odell Beckham Jr. (OBJ) faced as he took a trip to Miami before a playoff game against the Packers, as critics blamed him for the loss instead of focusing on the game.
Then, there’s Michael Jordan.
Johnson adds, “Michael Jordan gambled in the middle of the night, went and gave 50, won championships. Had nothing to do with it.” What’s the takeaway? As long as Parsons makes the right noise on the field, what happens beyond it shouldn’t be anyone’s concern. Micah Parsons is the face of the Cowboys’ defense, no questions asked.
And he is not ready to let anyone’s criticism bother whether that of DeMarcus Lawrence or others.
Micah Parsons shuts down ‘ridiculous’ feud with DeMarcus Lawrence
The former Cowboys defensive end, DeMarcus Lawrence, took a jibe at Parsons after signing with the Seahawks. Lawrence didn’t hold back as he explained why he left Dallas. And he imposed a significant part of the blame on Parsons.
“Maybe if you spent less time tweeting and more time winning, I wouldn’t have left,” he adds.
But Parsons wasn’t amused, as he outrightly called the outrageous remark. He retorted, “I think it’s ridiculous. You watch the tape. There’s no question I’m locked in.” He further continued, “I’m giving my actual best effort out there on the field, which I think that’s all that matters.”
Lawrence made a strong hint that Parsons’ Twitter activity was a problem. But Parsons laughed it out. He adds, “Some people drink. Some people smoke. I like to tweet. I like to be active and know about the ball.”
Simultaneously, he’s more than ready for his role in the field. “I thought it was my time last year, trying to bring that team back in life, even though most people thought we were dead in the water.”
He concludes, “Now it’s my time to really take over.”
Parsons is still playing on his rookie deal, which will end soon. He knows what he needs. “I just played these last couple years on $2 [million] and $3 million. I think if I had $40 million, I’d be the happiest man alive.”
The Cowboys ended 2024 with a disappointing 7-10 record. Revamping the defense and a determined Parsons can bring around the necessary change in 2025.
