“Because I was born in the US, raised in the US. It’s a simple fact that I say I’m an American.” Henry Cejudo stated these important words to Home of Fight before squaring up against Song Yadong in the UFC Fight Night 252 main event. The former UFC two-division champion has always taken pride in his nationality and ethnicity. Despite having a challenging childhood, ‘Triple C’ was able to live the American Dream and is a big supporter of the 45th and 47th President of his country, Donald Trump.
For the unversed, Cejudo was among the resilient Mexican immigrants who sought a promising life on American soil. He was the second-youngest of seven siblings, and let us tell you, life wasn’t very kind to his family. His father was a notorious figure, who once even threatened to hurt his own family. Nelly Rico, the mother of seven, consequently decided to flee from New Mexico to Los Angeles, California with all of her children when he was only 4 years old.
From there to now, Henry Cejudo has triumphed over every hurdle life has thrown at him. ‘Triple C’ became the youngest American to win Olympic gold at the age of 21 and then transitioned to MMA to become perhaps one of the best to ever do it. Now, he is happy with his family, and we can clearly say that he has won in life. Also recently, he got to meet and shake hands with the POTUS during the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championship Finals.
Sharing his experience on the Champ and the Tramp podcast, Henry Cejudo said, “100% That’s why a lot of people get off because I’m such a supporter. But, I travel the world to 40 different countries from wrestling and just see the world at its finest and its worst and I’m just like f— I’m just proud to be an American dude! You know my parents came to this country maybe not in the most political way. But, how do I say man, they escaped a fu—-g warzone!”
The former double champ further added, “My mom came here, she did her best. My dad f—, he was d–g dealing, doing XYZ and unfortunately, that didn’t work out for him, so he got deported. But I take a lot of experience that I have, and I’m just honored to be in that position, and I’m glad somebody like President Trump has taken the lead in really bringing businesses into politics.”

Although Henry Cejudo is not the most celebrated fighter with Mexican heritage like Yair Rodriguez or Cain Velazquez, he has never shied away from feeling proud of his heritage. ‘Triple C’ definitely acknowledges the fact that America has shaped him to be the champion, but his heart still holds Latin American values. Cejudo previously told Home of Fight, “I just think it’s unfortunate because I love my heritage, bro. I think people take that sh– the wrong way, man! I love my Mexican heritage – My mom, rice and beans… My heart’s probably a little more Latino than anything.”
Cejudo is currently experiencing a significant downfall in his career losing three consecutive fights in a row after returning from a 3-year hiatus. His last loss was against Song Yadong was monumental, but also controversial. So, ‘Triple C’ is trying his best to overturn it!
Henry Cejudo wants to overturn the accidental eye-poke loss against Song Yadong
Losing hurts, but it hurts even more when the reason ceases to be decisive. Although Cejudo was losing in all the judges’ cards at UFC Fight Night 252, an accidental eye-poke ruined the entire main event. Although Song Yadong won the bout via technical decision, Cejudo still believes that an eye-poke doctor stoppage loss wasn’t justified in this case.
‘Triple C’ in the Bohnfire podcast, revealed that he had been trying his best to overturn that decision loss against Song Yadong by filing an appeal. He said, “I filed an appeal. But, when I filed the appeal, I think I had to give my whole two cents, but I think I’m gonna get a couple of lawyers involved, to actually do it correctly and see if we can overturn that.”
