(EXCLUSIVE) Bills’ R1 Pick Maxwell Hairston Sends Subtle Warning to Patrick Mahomes in an Ambitious Message

I am the ultimate competitor. I will literally give everything I have in my body to go out there and fight and compete every game, every practice, and I’m just gonna live it on the field every time.” That’s not a rehearsed draft-night line. That’s Maxwell Hairston, raw and real. Before his name was ever called on the NFL Draft stage, Andrew Whitelaw spoke to the former Kentucky CB in an Exclusive EssentiallySports interview. And what did he tell us? Let’s just say there’s something the Kansas City Chiefs, or specifically Patrick Mahomes, might want to take note of.

Draft night confirmed what Buffalo already knew — Maxwell Hairston was their guy. The Bills selected the 5’11, 183-pounder with their 30th pick, officially making him one of the newest faces in a secondary that needed a jolt of speed and swagger. But what stood out to us even before the pick was made? His mindset. His mission. And his Mahomes’ mention. “One QB you can’t wait to intercept in the NFL,” Andrew Whitelaw asked. “Pat Mahomes,” he revealed. Following up with a chuckle, he added, “And then go do a commercial with him the next day for Head and Shoulders.” He meant it, and it wasn’t just talk.

This Exclusive EssentiallySports interview happened before the draft lights came on. And yet, as you can see, Maxwell Hairston already had the energy of a first-rounder. He was already thinking like a pro. And fittingly, he already had a Head and Shoulders endorsement, the same brand Patrick Mahomes has worked with since the fall of 2019.

I’m so thankful for this partnership, and I’m so excited to get to learn more and more about this brand,” the 21-year-old West Bloomfield, Michigan native told us. “You know they’re big on consistency on and off the field. That’s something that I pride myself on as well. So just being able to partner with these guys is truly an honor. You know I get guys like Pat Mahomes who’s working with them as well, like the official, you know, NFL shampoo, and they’re that for a reason.”

Call it confidence. Call it vision. But the Bills just landed a 4.28-speed CB who’s ready to make a difference. He’s the next UK’s first-rounder after LB Jamin Davis in 2021. Buffalo is getting an ultimate competitor, ultimate teammate,” Hairston declared on stage in Green Bay, embracing the moment. “And they’re getting somebody that’s going to get Josh Allen the ball back. Let’s get to work!” And this selection is not by accident if you rewind back to January.

Can Maxwell Hairston change Buffalo’s future?

Buffalo’s last heartbreak was the 2025 AFC Championship—that 32-29 loss to the KC Chiefs. Christian Benford went with a concussion. Kaiir Elam stepped in. Patrick Mahomes pounced. That game exposed a weak link in the secondary, and they knew they couldn’t run it back with the same personnel. Elam? Gone to Dallas. Now, Maxwell Hairston steps in, ready to bring fire to a high-stakes CB room alongside Benford and Taron Johnson. And if his college tape is any clue, he’s ready.

Maxwell Hairston had a breakout season in 2023 at Kentucky—six interceptions, returning two for TDs in all 13 game starts to earn All-SEC honors. Even after a shoulder injury that kept him away from action in five games, he still racked up 19 tackles, a sack, and another pick six. His Combine numbers lit up the charts—39.5” vertical and 10’9” broad jump, second and third-best among CBs. And in our Exclusive EssentiallySports interview, he made it clear that he wants to play in the Super Bowl in the NFL and face the best.

And guess what? Buffalo will face the best in 2025. Both the last Super Bowl contenders—Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles—are on the Bill’s home schedule. Perhaps Hairston’s already got those dates circled. Draft night was emotional. “I’m so happy to hear my name called. It’s truly a dream come true,” he said.

Now he’s got the dream. The platform. The team. And who knows? That Head and Shoulders commercial might come after Maxwell Hairston snags one of Patrick Mahomes’ passes.
