A double-edged sword. That’s how most people describe social media – a platform that can both uplift and undermine, often at the same time. For golfers, social media has become a key part of their online presence, offering a way to share their passion and build their brand. However, the constant competition that comes with social media can also erode self-worth and create unrealistic expectations. Despite this, many new creators are thriving on social media, including Grant Hovrat and Paige Spiranac, who are making golf more accessible and fun. Even established golfers like Phil Mickelson are leveraging social media to connect with fans, and it seems new golfers are also accepting its power.
When asked about social media’s impact on golf in an exclusive interview with EssentiallySports’s Andrew Whitelaw, LIV Golfer Catlin said it’s a great way to grow your fan base and connect with people. “I think we’re only at the tip of the iceberg, and there’s so many more things that are going to be coming out that are going to be really cool and innovative and grow the game.” He believes golf’s lifetime appeal makes it ideal for growth through social media.
Catlin even shared a secret conversation he had with 2-time U.S. Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau that has been gaining attention on social media. He revealed that he had a conversation with DeChambeau about potentially collaborating on a project, with DeChambeau showcasing the science of golf. “I told Bryson, I was like, ‘You know, the two of us have broken 60, maybe we should try and break 50 together,’” Catlin said.
Well, DeChambeau and Catlin have been friends for quite a while now, so seeing them break 60 won’t be a surprise. DeChambeau and Catlin’s friendship stretches back to their teenage years, when they’d frequently play in the same junior events, including the AJGA and Northern California Amateurs. Their bond grew stronger as they attended college around the same time and competed in events like the Cal State Amateur, where they were even featured in the match play bracket together alongside other future stars.
Catlin also reflected on the impact of social media on golf, stating, “It’ll be interesting to see, you know, when we look back 10-20 years down the road, how much it has influenced it. You know, you think of Tiger from, you know, ’95 to 2005, and all the people that he inspired. You know, that was kind of my time, and you know, I think about all the players that I’ve grown up with and played with, and a lot of them like, got inspiration from Tiger.”
“And you know, I think that’s, you know, you ask people 20 years down the road, where’s some of their inspiration come from, and I think a lot of it’s going to come from social media, YouTube golf, uh, you know, it’ll be some of it will be the same, you know, it’ll be the TV, you know, watching the guys on TV, but I think the social media adds a new aspect that’s really cool.” While social media has changed the landscape of golf for the better, it has not been without challenges. Take DeChambeau’s journey for example, and you know what, hear from the golfer himself!
