The 2025 track and field calendar is missing dates, and the fans have noticed. For the American fans and athletes, it had just begun to look like a celebration of the sport on home soil. But a rattling shake-up has changed the course of events, and fans could not help but feel robbed. So, which of the major USATF events have been axed? How are fans reacting?
It’s the kind of news track fans were hoping they wouldn’t hear. The USATF New York City Grand Prix, the Bermuda Games, and the Los Angeles Grand Prix—three of the important fixtures on the U.S. athletics calendar—won’t be returning in 2025, as the statement read from USATF. The biggest shock? The New York City Grand Prix. It was set for June 21 at Icahn Stadium, but the tournament has been cancelled now. The meet was once a Diamond League staple from 2010 to 2015. And before that, it drew headlines as the Reebok Grand Prix going back to 2005. Some of the fastest, fiercest names in track and field have burned down that straightaway. When it came back in 2022 as a Continental Tour Gold meet, it felt like the city and the sport were reclaiming a little bit of magic.
Then there’s the Bermuda Games. Launched in 2022 as part of USATF’s Journey to Gold series, it brought a fresh breeze to the athletics world—literally. The island vibes, the international lineup, the chance to earn world ranking points and prize money—it all felt new and needed. For three short years, Bermuda gave the sport something different.
And let’s not forget the LA Grand Prix. It only joined the scene in 2023, but it didn’t take long for it to make waves. Held at UCLA’s Drake Stadium, it quickly earned a spot in fans’ calendars—and in athletes’ hearts. By 2024, it will already be a Continental Tour Gold meet. Big performances, big names, California sunshine—it was everything you’d want from a track meet.
In 2022, USATF helped re-launch the NYC Grand Prix and created a new meet, the USATF Bermuda Games. In 2023, USATF added the LA Grand Prix.

All three meetings were aired live on NBC just last year—a clear sign that they weren’t minor events. As per letsrun.com, NYC Grand Prix meet director Mark Wetmore did not respond to a request for comment, but in a statement, USA Track & Field (USATF) responded:
“USA Track & Field is disappointed to learn of the cancellation of the 2025 New York Grand Prix… While USATF does not organize this event, we understand the impact this change may have on athletes seeking critical opportunities to compete, earn prize money, and gain world-ranking points.
Our domestic calendar is strategically designed with depth and flexibility, ensuring that elite athletes have consistent, high-quality, competitive platforms throughout the season. USATF remains committed to supporting elite athletes by actively securing viable alternatives…”
Track and Field fans left devastated after the news
Track and field fans are reeling ever since the news. When word spread that the NYC, LA, and Bermuda legs of the Games were being cut from the 2025 calendar, the reactions were understandable.
Many fans went straight to the heart. “Shame to see this,” one said. “The LA and NYC Grand Prix meets always had great throwing. Heck, Ryan’s world record was done at the LA Grand Prix!” For throw fans, losing a meet where history was made felt like a personal blow. Some questioned the timing. “Do you think this could have anything to do with the emergence of Grand Slam Track?” one asked, wondering if the new series was taking the spotlight.
Others didn’t hold back: “Track and field is doing a great job of killing it! On ,” one fan said with a heavy dose of sarcasm. Another added, “This is what’s killing the sport in the U.S.” Still, there’s a glimmer of loyalty under the frustration. “Major bummer,” someone posted.
As the USATF said in a brief statement, “will continue working with our partners to maximize opportunities across the US track and field landscape.”
For now, the reason behind this sudden announcement has not been revealed. Many moving parts work in the backend to make an event happen. Thus, it could be anything under the umbrella of calendar rearrangements, to logistics, to finances. So until more details emerge, it’s best to avoid jumping to conclusions.
Fans are holding onto hope that something bigger and better may be on the horizon. After all, the love for the sport hasn’t faded. The passion is still there, and so is the potential. Fans just want the stage and the stars to keep shining.
