Taylor Jenkins and Michael Malone’s teams fired them late in the regular season. And these firings seemed to come out of nowhere, with both the Nuggets and the Grizzlies having respectable seasons. In light of these firings, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr came out to give his two cents on the matter. And in doing so, he also revealed how he’s avoided the same fate as Malone and Jenkins. So far.
Steve Kerr appeared on the Willard and Dibs podcast after the Warriors lost to the Spurs. They debated various topics. But at one point, the hosts asked Steve for his take on his peer’s firing. To that end, Steve said, “I mean, I know the firings, this late in the season, really are seem unprecedented to me, but I don’t know my full NBA history. So those are both surprising, given the status of both teams.” But he followed this up with a worrying statement about his own future as the Dubs’ head coach.
“That’s how it works. And so lots of great coaches have been fired. I’ll probably be one of them at some point in my career, too. So this is the business we’re in. And, we all know what we’re signing up for,” said the former Chicago Bulls player. With the start to the season that the Dubs had, this could have been a real possibility. But with their turnaround following the Jimmy Butler trade, that day seems far, far off in the future once again.

Moreover, in the Nuggets’ case, the culture that was brewing within the club had become toxic. It seems there was a cold war brewing between former HC Michael Malone and ex-GM Calvin Booth.
Thankfully, this isn’t something Steve Kerr needs to worry about. Why? That’s because of the culture he’s fostered in the Dubs locker room. And on the same pod, he explained how that has kept his job safe as his team heads into the playoffs.
Steve Kerr reveals the state of the Warriors locker room as the regular season wraps up
The culture and vibe of a locker room make or break a team. If these aspects are off, having any semblance of success becomes an uphill battle. But over the years, the Warriors’ Steve Kerr has come to understand how to maintain the right vibe to build a successful team. Unsurprisingly, he gave a lot of credit to his players.
“I’ve got my flaws as a coach. There’s plenty of stuff I can do better, but I do think that we have a great vibe in our building. And, most of that is our players. But I think I’ve learned how to try to foster that vibe and create a good environment where everybody feels safe, and productive, and joyful. And I take a lot of pride in that,” revealed coach Kerr.
This player-first attitude of Kerr’s is responsible for a lot of his untold success as a coach in the NBA. Steve Kerr isn’t just a great tactician, he’s a great man-manager. And it’s not just players who are currently on the Dubs’ roster that say this. “I mean, coach Kerr is a, you know. He is a great guy, great guy,” said Andrew Wiggins, who left the Warriors for the Miami Heat this year.
So, Dubs fans, don’t worry. Like we said earlier, it’s difficult to see such a beloved coach get fired. Especially when everyone within the Warriors organization seems to love Kerr. But who knows? ‘Stranger Things’ have happened in the NBA!
