“I think we have too many tournaments in the season,” Iga Swiatek said during the 2024 Cincinnati Open. Last year, she dominated the clay courts, capturing her fourth French Open title and completing the Madrid-Rome-French Open sweep, a feat last achieved by Serena Williams in 2013. However, her reign was marred by inconsistency on other surfaces and a suspension that shook her world. Despite these challenges, Swiatek’s resilience shone through in the Billie Jean King Cup. While they lost to team Italy in the semifinals, her team and coach heaped praises on her standout performance. But this year might not see that magic again.
After a disappointing Australian Open semifinal exit, she faced more exits in Qatar and Dubai. At the Sunshine Double, Swiatek reached the Indian Wells semifinals, losing to Mirra Andreeva, and was defeated by Alexandre Eala in the Miami Open quarterfinals. Taking to her IG story on Wednesday, she wrote, “I have made a difficult decision. I know that this is not the information that fans, especially Polish ones, wanted, nevertheless it is the right decision. for me for now. I will not play in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tournament, which will be held in Radom. I always represent my country with pride.”
The Polish team will now be led by Magda Linette alongside Magdalena Frech, Maja Chwalinska, and Katarzyna Kawa. They face Team Ukraine and Team Switzerland in the BJK Cup Qualifiers. Swiatek explained, “I played everything there was to play for the country last year. I am extremely proud of the historic team successes—the BJKC semifinals and the UC finals. Now it’s time for more balance, focusing on myself and my training.” She added, “I keep my fingers crossed for the girls and for the whole team.”

Last year, Swiatek’s performance at the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup was remarkable. She led Poland to their first semifinal appearance, defeating Linda Nosková in a thrilling singles match, 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-5. Swiatek then partnered with Katarzyna Kawa to secure a decisive doubles victory over the Czech Republic’s Marie Bouzková and Katerina Siniakova, winning 6-2, 6-4. This historic win showcased Swiatek’s resilience and teamwork, as Poland ultimately fell to Italy in the semifinals. It’s not surprising to see Swiatek step down from representing her country, given her past performances.
Remember how vocal Swiatek was about the stress of playing multiple tournaments? She told Sky Sports, “It’s not going to end well. It makes tennis less fun for us. I love playing in all these places, but it’s pretty exhausting, and I think most of the WTA players would tell you that, especially when you’re playing at a high level.” Her words echo the sentiments of many players.
ATP’s Carlos Alcaraz expressed similar frustrations, stating, “Sometimes I really want to take some days for myself that I can’t because I have to practice, I have to travel.” Caroline Garcia ended her season early due to panic and anxiety attacks from the constant grind. Elina Svitolina highlighted the conflict between maintaining rankings and health. Donna Vekić described the schedule as “brutal,” noting it leaves little time for rest.
It’s good that Swiatek is finally taking steps to protect her peace. She spoke about the importance of getting rest during her off-season as well.
Swiatek prioritizes her “mind and body” to take a break
As the curtains closed on her 2024 season, Iga Swiatek took to Instagram to share moments from her journey, both on and off the court, and penned a heartfelt message: “ Thanks for this season. First and foremost I’m thanking myself and my team because it was another extraordinary year. It was the season of not being a superhero and accepting it, facing new challenges, grinding, hard work, appreciating milestones and unlocking new achievements. But what’s fundamental, I finish this year with huge satisfaction and pride of my grit, strength and everything that I’ve done and achieved which says more than any words. It’s time to rest and reset. My body and mind need that. Thank you to every kind and supportive human being who is by my side in this journey. See you soon.”
Swiatek’s 2024 season was a rollercoaster ride marked by significant highs and lows. Her fourth French Open title at Roland Garros was a highlight, cementing her status among the tournament’s elites. However, setbacks like a semifinal loss at the Olympics and a quarterfinal exit at the US Open left their mark on Iga Swiatek, affecting her both physically and mentally. Despite these challenges, Swiatek concludes the year with pride. Her achievements, including five Grand Slam titles and 22 singles titles, underscore her enduring success.
Now, despite not winning a title, she’s making strides by reaching the semifinals and quarterfinals consistently. Her recent withdrawal from the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup shows that Swiatek is looking forward to putting her energy in the right places. Perhaps we’ll see that play as the clay court season. What do you think?
