French Open 2025: Heartbreak for 29YO Pro as Injury Woes Force 4th Straight Withdrawal From Parisian Clay

“I will delay my comeback,” said Matteo Berrittini, back in 2022 after being forced to miss out on the French Open. The 29-year-old was struggling from a hand injury he sustained earlier that season. He later had surgery, but it required a proper recovery period. Hence, he had no choice but to withdraw from the Roland-Garros. However, his distance from the French Open has deepened in the last three seasons. Reason? Persistent physical obstacles.

And now, just hours before the 2025 main draw ceremony for Roland Garros, the Italian has revealed another unfortunate news. Matteo Berrittini has officially withdrawn from the 2025 French Open as his injury woes continues.

It seems the road ahead for the Italian is tough in the remaining 2025 season. On Thursday, Eurosport Italy’s journalist reported: Unfortunately it was predictable: Matteo #Berrettini who showed up at the press conference in Rome in tears after his withdrawal against Ruud, withdraws from Roland Garros.” The update is even more concerning when taking into account that “The Roman has not played the Parisian Slam since 2021”

Berrettini’s last appearance at the French Open was in 2021. In that edition, he succeeded in reaching the QF stage before 24-time slam king Novak Djokovic ousted him. Since then, the Italian remained absent from the Parisian clay for three straight editions. In 2022, he missed the entire clay season because of his hand injury. Then in 2023, the abdominal and oblique issue kept him away from the Roland Garros. Last season, he was simply “not quite ready” due to illness, as reported by BBC in May 2024.

A few days back, during the R32 against Casper Ruud at the Italian Open, he opted to leave due to an injury. “I feel so bad for him because this is where he’s from, his home Masters 1000,” Ruud said after the match while wishing Berrettini a speedy recovery.

His latest withdrawal from Roland Garros has now made it four-in-a-row. Few weeks back, too, in Madrid, Berrettini had to retire against Jack Draper in the third round. But what’s the core issue that’s ended his French Open hopes this year?

Matteo Berrettini opens up on the physical setbacks in 2025

During the post-match conference following his walkover against Casper Ruud in Rome, Matteo Berrettini touched upon on the problem that forced him to retire. “Today until ten minutes before the match I thought I couldn’t make it. Then I said, whatever, I’m going to try, come on. I was surprised at how my body reacted up to a certain point,” he said, as reported by Express.co.uk on May 22.

“Then I felt another pull, towards the end of the first set, and after that I couldn’t remain in the match, remain focused. I had to pull out one more time.” He further added, “I did not want to retire, but then I know what happens if I do not stop, I have to spend three months not playing, every time I sneeze I jump. I did not want that thing there to happen again.”

Previously, he revealed that he’s suffering from an oblique injury. It made him to stay away from tennis for a long time in the past. Now it seems it’s resurfaced again. “It is close to a point where I have hurt before, I don’t know what is wrong with my obliques. The feelings unfortunately I know them well because I’ve been there over and over again,” he added.

His avid fans will simply hope for a speedy recovery so he can return to play the remaining season. Do you think he will be able to make a timely comeback? Let us know in the comments below.
