For most athletes, an Olympic medal is the ultimate prize. A gleaming testament to years of sweat, sacrifice, and relentless pursuit. Yet, for Gabby Thomas, success has a much deeper meaning than merely the heaviness of a shiny medal that she would get as a reward. And despite the multiple gold medals to her name, she wants her legacy to be more than that.
And with the 2028 Olympic cycle already in motion, she will be looking forward to adding some more weight to her deck. According to “TIME,” Gabby Thomas reflected on her medals. She said, “The medals are truly just objects for me.” This is quite surprising coming from someone who has already racked up 5 Olympic medals and a World Championship gold in her career so far. But this tells us more about the deep-rooted ambition inside Thomas and her drive to win.
Thomas further added, “I don’t look at them and genuinely feel like, ‘Oh my God, those are so cool. I genuinely feel like I’m not done yet.” But while she already registered a milestone by winning three gold medals in Paris, she still has a goal in mind. Gabby mentions, “I’m still on my journey. I’m still in that process. I have so many more to come.” With that being said, Thomas has also reflected on something big.
While there have been ongoing rumors about the next Olympics to her retirement, she also mentioned something else. She mentions, “The fact that LA 2028 is in America, in my home country, I just don’t think it could be wrapped more beautifully for me.” Is this wrap-up in question supposed to be her retiring for the future? But if that is the case, then Thomas can also look forward to one more of her life goals.
What future unfolds for Gabby Thomas?
Gabby Thomas will be looking forward to making the most out of 2025. After all, 2024 was one of the most momentous years of her career. She won three golds in the city of love and made her mark as a modern great. But as if this wasn’t enough, she also participated in the Athlos NYC 2024. In the special women-only track event by Alexis Ohanian, she smoked her competition to snag a silver. With a time of 22.21, she was only behind Brittany Brown, who with a time of 22.18 got the gold.
Thomas’ medal journey in 2025 will start with the upcoming Grand Slam Track of Michael Johnson in the 200 m dash. She will be joining Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Quincy Hall in the GST 2025. When and where is it scheduled? The GST will start on April 4 in Kingston and will wrap up on June 29 in Los Angeles. Is that it? No, it’s just the beginning of this year; there is more to her.
As she claimed the 200-meter silver medal in the World Championship held in Budapest, Hungary, in 2023, Thomas is now eyeing winning her first world title. She will also be looking to defend her gold in the 4×100 relay. But with the competition being held in Tokyo in September, there’s still quite some time for Thomas to prepare. And this is exactly what she is looking forward to.
Her immediate goal for the time being seems to be the 2025 edition of the Athlos event. And with a prize pool of $60,000 for the winner, it will be quite a wonderful start to Gabby’s season. While the dates are yet to be announced, if last year’s edition is to be taken as a clue, it might be somewhere around April. But this is not it either. There are also the Diamond League qualifiers.
Though the season is yet to start for Gabby Thomas, she is all prepared for the upcoming events amidst the hint of her retirement. It would be interesting to see Gabby Thomas on track, and fans must be looking forward to it, especially GST, as it is happening for the first time. Are you excited about her 2025 journey? We surely are.
